Emmanuel Bach – Lennox in Paris (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 192 kHz]

British composer Sir Lennox Berkeley still needs to be more widely appreciated, and this recording puts his music into a wider context of the environment that shaped him. France played a vital part in Berkeley’s development: apart from being a Francophile, circumstances brought him into contact with Nadia Boulanger, with whom he studied formally during the years 1926–1932, which Berkeley spent in Paris. While there he also met Francis Poulenc, among other artistic figures.

Eblana String Trio – The King’s Alchemist: British String Trios (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

Featuring world premiere recordings of trios by Sally Beamish and Hugh Wood bookended by seldom heard works by Moeran and Finzi, showcases the sheer wealth of string trio repertoire by British composers. Although diverse in style and substance, the four works are bound together by the common strands of vivid storytelling and a shared musical language. Finzi’s Prelude and Fugue – the composers only piece of chamber music for strings alone – was composed in 1938 and conceived as a tribute to the renowned teacher R.O. Morris, with whom Finzi studied 16th century counterpoint. It is recorded here by the Eblana String Trio for only the second time, following its premiere LP recording in 1983. Ithaka by Hugh Wood is described by the composer himself as ‘a sort of mini-symphonic poem’. This one-movement work takes its inspiration from Cavafy’s meditation on Ulysses’ homeward voyage, and vibrantly depicts the adventures, discoveries, and dangers encountered along the way. Sally Beamish’s The King’s Alchemist is similarly programmatic music, reflecting aspects of the extraordinary story of John Damian, a European alchemist who resided at the court of King James IV in the early 16th century. The CD concludes with Moeran’s String Trio, written in 1931 and deservedly counted amongst his finest works.

Willowhayne Records presents the fifth volume in the critically acclaimed ‘Experience’ series, recorded on the ‘Father Willis’ organ of Hereford Cathedral. Played by Douglas Tang, this album shows this magnificent instrument to its full potential in music ranging from the early Baroque to the twentieth century, culminating in Whitlock’s ‘Plymouth Suite.’ Douglas Tang is a sought-after British conductor and keyboardist. Currently based in London, he was previously Assistant Director of Music of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney and Chapel Organist of the UNESCO World Heritage site- the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich. He has also worked at Hereford Cathedral and Croydon Minister aside from having held the prestigious position of Organ Scholar of King’s College, Cambridge. The Hereford organ has been likened to a vintage Rolls Royce car, lovingly maintained, retaining its original and stately majest. Built in 1892 by ‘Father Willis,’ it replaced an earlier Gray and Davison instrument and its display case dates from 1863.

Christopher White, Melanie Reinhard – Beethoven: The Complete Violin Sonatas (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

Christopher White and Melanie Reinhard have been performing the Beethoven Violin Sonatas together for over thirty years, from when they first met in Toronto at the Royal Conservatory of Music. They have become a staple of their recitals in combination with other repertoire. Although the ten sonatas are mostly early works and not his most significant (compared to the string quartets for example) they are a charming and varied set of compositions. It is a shame that often one only hears the select (and famous) few such as the Spring or Kreutzer sonatas because some of the lesser-known sonatas (for instance Op. 12 No. 2 in A major or the glorious slow movement in the sixth sonata) deserve a much wider audience.

Ben Goldscheider, Daniel Hill – Debut (2018) [FLAC 24bit, 192 kHz]

Willowhayne Records presents the debut recording by BBC Young Musician Grand Finalist Ben Goldscheider.
The idea behind this CD was to present a concert programme taking the listener on a musical journey through the development of the horn and the subsequent music written for it. Starting in the 21st century and then jumping to classical, through romantic, early and late twentieth century and back to the 21st century, this disc shows the full range of the horn’s versatility, as well as the technical and musical maturity of this exceptional artist.

This recording not only celebrates multiple centenaries of Malcolm Arnold, Ruth Gipps and Dennis Brain (the dedicatee of the Arnold concerto) who were all born in 1921 – but also three composers whose musical language and worlds bear striking similarities. Both Arnold and Gipps were writing at a time when the grain of musical fashion was going against them. It was composers such as Pierre Boulez, Luigi Nono and Karlheinz Stockhausen from the Darmstadt school who were the intellectual fashion of the time, the music much more experimental, serialist and philosophical in its makeup.

Alexander Rider – Fresque marine, Vol. 1 (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

An abundance of brilliant French harpists at the dawn of the last century led to composers in that country being galvanised to write for the harp as a solo instrument. Works by Debussy, Fauré, Ravel and Pierné are still the staple repertoire of harpists, but there exists much more music unjustly neglected and, until now, almost forgotten. Fresque Marine brings this music once more into the light, using the intimate and rich tones of an original French Erard concert harp, such as the composers would have heard in their aural imagination. The recital features music by such well-known harpist composers as Renié and Tournier, but also celebrates less well-known composers, particularly pieces by female composers, all brought forth in a kaleidoscope of subtle colours.
