Friedrich Gulda – The Gulda Touch, Vol. 2 (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Gulda began playing the piano at the age of seven. In 1942 he began music studies with Bruno Seidlhofer (piano) and Joseph Marx (music theory and composition) at the Vienna Academy of Music, now the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. At the age of 16, he succeeded at the Geneva International Music Competition and quickly rose to world fame thereafter. His extremely precise interpretations of Mozart and Beethoven, which are particularly faithful to the original works, are still considered milestones in the history of interpretation. Characteristic of Gulda is his extremely precise and rhythmically accentuated playing.

His repertoire included works by J. S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy and Ravel, with his interpretations of Beethoven’s piano sonatas and Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier causing a particular stir. In his concerts, he often played works by Bach faithfully on a clavichord.

Gulda had an excellent memory. He needed, for example (as workshop participants report), to look at the musical text of Robert Schumann’s “Forest Scenes” for only a few minutes before playing the work from memory.

One of Gulda’s most famous students is the Argentine pianist Martha Argerich.

The Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB) is a Berlin orchestra rich in tradition. It goes back to the first musical radio hour Berlin broadcast on October 29, 1923 at 8 p.m. from the Vox-Haus and initially consisted only of the all-round musician Otto Urack, who sometimes played together with individual musicians. The orchestra did not acquire a symphonic lineup until the spring of 1925, and Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk AG (MIRAG) did not participate in the MDR Symphony Orchestra, which was nine months older, until October 17, 1924.

In concerts by large symphony orchestras, it is often serious works that dominate. But striking a lighter tone is also an art in itself, and composers such as Mozart, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Gershwin were masters of this. Soon after the orchestra was founded, the Berliner Philharmoniker initiated a concert series of popular music, a tradition which can still be seen today, such as in the Waldbühne and New Year’s Eve concerts. This playlist features a selection of particularly popular pieces ranging from the Baroque to the present day.

Anna Moffo – Singers of the Century: Verdi & Mozart Recital (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Anna Moffo war eine US-amerikanische Opernsängerin (lyrischer Sopran) und Schauspielerin.

Anna Moffo was the daughter of the Italian-American shoemaker Nicolas Moffo and his wife Regina (Cinti). In addition, she also performed as a singer in song recitals, at weddings, funerals and in choirs. According to Moffo, her parents wanted her to become a Catholic nun after graduating from school. Instead, she won a free place for a four-year apprenticeship at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia after singing the only opera aria she knew: “Un bel di vedremo” from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. She first studied literary history and music there and came to Italy in 1953 to complete this education. There she studied at the University of Perugia.
