Dvořák Suk is also said to have passed tests on his knowledge of locomotive engineering to get Dvorak’s approval to marry his daughter! Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565) is by far the best-known organ work of European art music. It is traditionally attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, even if his authorship was occasionally doubted. The composition consists of three sections: a toccata, i.e. a prelude (prelude) of fast runs and full-grip chords, and a subsequent four-part fugue, which in turn leads to a final section called “Recitativo,” which again takes up the quasi-improvisational character of the beginning. Clear motivic and harmonious references connect all parts.

He was born in a tailor’s family. At the age of nine, he was admitted to the Royal School of Music in Parma. Studying in cello, piano and composition classes, he received a scholarship at the age of eleven, and at thirteen began performing as a professional cellist. In 1885, at the age of 18, he graduated with honors from the Conservatory in Parma in the cello class with L. Carini; even as a student, he led a small orchestra organized by him from fellow students . After graduating from the Conservatory, he was accepted into the traveling Italian opera troupe as a cello concertmaster, assistant choirmaster and correpetitor. In 1886, the troupe went to Rio de Janeiro for the winter season; during these tours, on June 25, 1886, due to arguments between the company’s permanent conductor, managers and the public, Toscanini had to stand at the conductor’s desk during the performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida. He recited the opera by heart. Thus began his conducting career, to which he devoted about 70 years.
