Csabay Domonkos – Generations, Works by Haydn, Beethoven, Czerny, Liszt, Wieniawski (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Domonkos Csabay, winner of several competition awards, is one of the young excellences of the Hungarian piano school. His recording commemorates the handshake of generations; it is particularly interesting that all the composers featured were in a master-pupil relationship with each other: Haydn was Beethoven’s teacher, Beethoven was Carl Czerny’s teacher, Czerny was Liszt’s teacher…

Capella Savaria, Zsolt Kalló, Nicholas McGegan – Mozart: Double Concertos (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Capella Savaria has earned its fame as the first period- instrument chamber orchestra of Hungary. The ensemble’s objectives were, from the onset, to play baroque and classical music in an authentic way. This time they perform Mozart’s double concerto (including additions by Robert D. Levin) together with conductor Nicholas McGegan.“Ideally it should not only sound Mozartean in every bar, but should also produce a feeling of balance in both rhetorical and structural domains—a great challenge.”

Capella Savaria, Zsolt Kalló – Michael Haydn, Violin & Flute Concertos (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 48 kHz]

Michael Haydn was a great composer — just not as great as his older brother Franz Joseph. The two were both highly regarded during their lifetimes. But over time Franz Joseph’s popularity completely eclipsed Michael’s.To be fair, choral music was Michael Haydn’s forte. But his relatively few orchestral works are more than historical curiosities. One of his string quartets, for example, was misattributed to Franz Joseph. And for years, Michael Haydn’s Symphony No. 25 was credited to Mozart. The Capella Savria present four of Michael Haydn’s concertos. These include his two flute concertos and two of three violin concertos. Haydn composed the works in Salzburg, where he was a friend of the Mozarts. The concertos bear some similarities to Leopold Mozart’s style. The melodic phrases are balanced and clearly defined. The solo parts require a high degree of skill to play. But they’re not especially flashy. The elegance of expression tempers the technical challenges.

Boros Misi – Inspirations, works by Brahms, Chopin (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

I have juxtaposed the monumental variations with the apparently lighter, but in fact musically profound Chopin pieces. Brahms’s music is slightly serious, Chopin’s is seriously light. ((Missi Boris) Music Boris was born on April 11, 2003, inPAcs. At the age of 5, he and his brother received a piano and since then he has spent most of his free time playing the instrument. From the first moment he experimented with sounds, inventing his own melodies, and then he played them again and again, with variations. From the age of 6, he has learned to play the piano at the Ferenc Liszt Music School in Pace, and his teacher is Mrs IldikA3 Schmidt MegyimA3recz.

Heritages is another personal compilation of recordings by Balázs Fülei. All the pieces on the record are related in some way to folk music. The composers were touched by musical heritage, and from this soil there sprang new works. Thus, in their notes, the past and the present are joined together, the music of the community is linked to the expression of the individual artist.

These three figures of turn-of-the-century music, Ravel, Franck and Debussy, do not prompt listeners to hear their works from afar. Their music winds its way into the innermost channels of human imagination, and through the sound, listeners may feel that they are the protagonists in this shared artistic experience.

We live in a time of investigation. We take samples, send them to a laboratory, and get results. We draw up tests and categorize things. Composers are present among us through their works. As long as we play their pieces, they exist. We can take a sample of this music. Let’s take an excerpt of two bars, a motif, any excerpt, at random! In this imaginary music laboratory, would we be able to ascertain who wrote the music, or what their personality was like? Their temperament? For the program of this album, we have chosen two composers for whom the answer is “yes”.

Anima Musicæ Chamber Orchestra – String Serenades, Vol. 3: Herbert, Elgar, Fuchs & Schubert (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

The 3rd part of our series features the serenades of four Romantic composers. Every bar of Victor Herbert’s serenade presents Herbert as a composer who is intimately familiar with the world of the musical stage. Elgar and Fuchs’s serenades are youthful compositions: the former holds it’s place in the repertoire for the ensemble to this day, while Fuchs’s serenade has the technical perfection typical of the composer. This recording closes with what is perhaps the most popular melody from Schubert’s last song cycle, Schwanengesang (Swan Song). Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra was founded by Laszlo Horvath in 2010 with the students of the Liszt Ferenc Academy. Despite it’s short career the chamber orchestra accomplished a large number of concerts with growing success. From the very beginning, the orchestra has not only been inspired, but also mentored by János Rolla, the artistic director of the world renowned Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra.

Anima Musicæ Chamber Orchestra, Máté Szűcs – Hoffmeister, Stamitz & Mozart: Classical Viola Concertos (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

A mere dozen or so printed viola concertos are known of from the Viennese Classical era, contrasting with countless violin, cello, and flute concertos. There can be only one explanation for this: there were relatively few players available of truly virtuoso ability. Alongside two emblematic viola concertos of the time, those by Hoffmeister and Stamitz, this album includes the 1802 transcription for viola of Mozart’s A major clarinet concerto.

Reinecke, Hugo Wolf, Karlowicz, Kalinnikov – four rarely heard composers of the Late-Romanticism, and four lyrical serenades of the fin-de-siècle are presented on this album. The Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra, named as “the soul of music”, has gained the title National Youth Orchestra 2018–2020. It is one of the most dynamically developing youth ensembles in Hungary. They have received prizes and awards in several Hungarian and international competitions and are in demand at major concert

Alex Szilasi – Schubert: Piano Sonata in B-Flat major, D. 960 – Brahms: 4 Ballades, Op. 10 (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Alex Szilasi – Schubert: Piano Sonata in B-Flat major, D. 960 – Brahms: 4 Ballades, Op. 10 (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The themes that appear in the first movement of Franz Schubert’s Sonata in B flat major form a kind of inner motivic and harmonic reference, and thus in a complex manner they link up all the movements. The music we hear in the first piece of Johannes Brahms’ Op. 10 Ballades is later put into a new light, and through conscious reference to the analogies of his musical models, the composer investigates symbolic aspects. The mysterious, inevitable fate of Franz Schubert’s wanderer and the figure in Johannes Brahms’ ballades thus gradually becomes clearer.

Accord Quartet – Joseph Haydn: The Sun Quartets Op. 20. (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

“In autumn 2001 four young men sat down together and played through the entire volume of Haydn’s Op. 20 – these were the Accord Quartet’s very first notes. Ever since then, they have relished the experience granted to them by the great master of the string quartet and of humour, “Papa Haydn”, as, most likely, have all musicians over the last 250 years. Genuine playfulness with musical form and part-writing, in which everything is present, from love to death, from dances to fugue. We recommend this recording most warmly not only to lovers of Haydn, but to anyone who would like to unwind, relax, dream with us, and enjoy these six amazing compositions.”
