Works by Impressionist masters Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel share the program with compositions by contemporary guitarists Roland Dyens and Arnaud Dumond.Debussy and Ravel introduced many of the compositional elements still used by guitar composers today: timbres, textures, and wholetone scales are a perfect fit with the instrument’s poetic qualities.

Baritone Dominique Côté created the album Amour et Fantaisie: Mélodies de Lionel Daunais in the form of a portrait, in order to pay tribute to this unique artist in the Canadian musical landscape. He has been both recognized and celebrated as an author, composer, performer, director, artistic director and radio host. Daunais’ music is catchy, with influences from French melodies and songs, sometimes even with jazzy overtones. A man of the theater, he managed to create complete characters and scenarios in the space of a song.

For his latest ATMA Classique recording project, pianist David Jalbert tackles the complete cycle of Prokofiev’s piano sonata; this ambitious undertaking will be released in three separate volumes starting in September 2021. The first volume features four piano sonatas from Prokofiev’s Russian period, which ended in 1918 with his departure for America. These are paired with four short pieces for piano, including the famous Suggestion diabolique (Diabolic suggestion).

Inspired by the magical, mythical world of sprites and fairies, the program includes Debussy’s Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune in an arrangement by Gustave Samazeuilh; Janacek’s Pohadka (A Fairy Tale); and Ravel’s Sonatine pour piano in transcriptions by Ariane Brisson; along with Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending, and Szymanowski’s Mythes for violin and piano, Op. 30 both transcribed by Ariane Brisson.

First prize winner of the CIOC (Canadian International Organ Competition 2021), Aaron Tan is the only person who, in addition to having won the CIOC in 2021, was among the winners of two other major organ competitions in North America: the CRCO National Organ Competition and the AGO National Competition for Young Artists (NYACOP).

For his debut album, the CIOC First Prize winner chose works by Fernando Germani, Percy Whitlock, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Jeanne Demessieux, Rachel Laurin, Henri Duparc (in a transcription by Aaron Tan) and Louis Vierne, performed on the Casavant Opus 796 organ at Our Lady Immaculate Basilica in Guelph, Ontario.
