Florian Helgath, Ruhr ChorWerk – Heinrich Schütz: Musikalische Exequien & Nikolaus Brass: Voices (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The encounter of different epochs is often the decisive moment of tension in music programmes. Chorwerk Ruhr chooses a particularly original path in its latest prank: a central work by Heinrich Schütz is juxtaposed with what Nikolaus Brass, born in 1949, develops from his encounter with the work of arguably the greatest German vocal composer of the early Baroque. Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien, a three-part funeral music with German text from 1637, vividly depicts suffering and death, but in accordance with Christian doctrine also gives great space to the certainty of salvation. Nikolaus Brass, as he says, conscious of this certainty, interrogates the music of his revered colleague and responds partly with almost verbatim quotations, partly with strongly contrasting passages from his works Voices 1 and Voices 2. In this new production, these two frame the Exequien as a large central work, again framed by two Schütz mottoes, so that a symmetrical overall arrangement is formed.

Even in the 17th century critics called it a “forced art”, and indeed, even for many professionals today it is not easy to understand scordatura as an intuitive way of playing the violin. But when composers master the art of retuned strings to perfection, completely new sound experiences are possible. Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was without doubt one of the greatest in this field, and so his seven sonatas recorded here really do offer “artful vocal harmonies”, as the Latin title promises. In each sonata, Biber prescribes different, sometimes considerably different, retunings – the result is sometimes considerably more, sometimes considerably less tension on the strings, which leads to a completely new tonal differentiation of the apparently so familiar string instruments. The ensemble “Der musikalische Garten”” presents this technically and musically perfect.

Der Musikalische Garten – Brescianello: Concerti à 3, Vol. 1 (2017) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

For a long time Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello worked as Kepellmeister at the Wurttemberg court in Stuttgart. His concerti a tre are actually triosonates for two violins and basso continuo. In these charming chamber music works Brescianello finds his own style, which is characterized by sonorous slow phrases and joy in virtuosity. The ensemble Der musikalische Garten, which has always been highly praised for its musical discoveries, recorded the first six of the 12 concerti a tre. The musicians of the ensemble Der musikalische Garten are current and graduated students of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and have met in Basel. The ensemble engages intensively in the German music of the seventeenth century, especially in the scordatura repertoire, of which most important representatives are H. I. F. Biber, Joh. H. Schmelzer or J. Pachelbel. However, the ensemble is always searching for new, rarely or never performed scordatura repertoire. The ensemble was selected as “Promising Ensemble 2011” by the IYAP Antwerpen and won second prize and audience’s prize of the international competition “Van Wassenaer” in Amsterdam 2011.

An “exemplary instrument” was the Dreymann organ built in 1837 in the St. Ignaz Church in the centre of Mainz. This was written by someone who should know: Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck, composer, organ virtuoso, author of an organ school and expert in the service of the Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt, who commissioned the construction of the instrument. Unfortunately, the organ did not survive the centuries and wars unscathed; minor repairs were made again and again, but it was not until 2015 to 2019 that it was restored from the ground up.

Capella De La Torre, Chorwerk Ruhr, Florian Helgath – Bodenschätze (Motetten aus dem 17. Jahrhundert) (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The great “composer of the millennium” Johann Sebastian Bach stands like a solitary rock in the landscape of music history. There is less talk about where he came from and what influenced him stylistically. Chorwerk Ruhr embarked on a search for clues with highly interesting results: the young Johann Sebastian also listened to and studied works that were already around 100 years old. In any case, during his later years as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, he ensured that the collection of motets Florilegium selectissimarum Cantionum was purchased anew – it was used so frequently in lessons under his aegis that the music material was completely worn out. The collection by the early Baroque master and school cantor Erhard Bodenschatz, first published in 1603, illustrates the then new compositional technique of the Baroque in a clearly comprehensible way in songs mostly by German or Italian masters.

Capricornus Ensemble Stuttgart, Henning Wiegräbe – Salzburg Relations (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Today, the music city of Salzburg basks in the fame of its most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He was born into a very music-friendly environment: Archbishop Sigismund III reigned from 1753 to 1771, who particularly promoted music and generously sponsored the travels of the young Mozart with his family – in contrast to his frugal successor Count Colloredo, who eventually abandoned Mozart Salzburg sold. In his childhood, however, his father Leopold and the young Michael Haydn were influential figures in Salzburg’s musical life; two men who shared a problem: they were overshadowed by even more prominent relatives. Leopold in that of his son, Michael, who is known as a child prodigy, in that of his world-famous brother Joseph. Works by these two and the very young “Wolferl” show the playful, light elegance that prevailed in Salzburg during this period of early Classicism – especially in works involving the shepherd’s horn, a Salzburg specialty that Henning Wiegräbe mastered with virtuosity.

The “Brahms Festival” was the beginning of the anniversary season 2021/22, which the Cappella Aquileia gifted its audience and itself for its 10th anniversary. All four symphonies as well as two piano concertos by Johannes Brahms were heard. The highlight of the festival is on this recording: Brahms’ 1st Symphony conducted by Marcus Bosch in a brilliant live recording.

Benedikt Kristjánsson, Ensemble Continuum, Sergey Malov – Judas. Arias and Recitatives by Johann Sebastian Bach (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Tenor Benedikt Kristjánsson has his own view of the biblical figure of Judas, who has imprinted himself in the collective memory of Christianity as the arch-villain. He wants to see him not only as the explicitly negative figure responsible for Jesus’ death, but as someone who played his part in the inevitable path of sacrificing the Messiah and thus in the core of Christian doctrine. Kristjánsson also has his own view of Johann Sebastian Bach. For his picture of Judas, he has chosen arias and recitatives from his oeuvre.

Ares Trio – Babadjanian: Piano Trio – Shostakovich: Piano Trio No. 2 (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The Ares Trio brings together two requiems in the form of piano trios by two composers whose active periods fell within those of the Soviet Union and who were harassed by the cultural bureaucracy there: Shostakovich composed his Trio for Piano and Strings, Op. 67, in memory of his beloved friend, the musician and music critic Iván Sollertìnski, who had always stood by him, even when the Leningrad composer’s music was condemned by Stalin, making him constantly fear arrest. The trio was premiered in Leningrad that same year, 1944, and has been part of the standard repertoire of piano trio literature ever since.

His colleague Georg Philipp Telemann, who was only a few years older, described him as “the greatest spirit of his time”. Reinhard Keiser is a striking example of a musician who was held in the highest esteem in his time, but is hardly present today. He wrote numerous stage works for the Hamburg Opera at the Gänsemarkt.

They offer such interesting blends of timbre that one wonders why they have become so rare on concert stages in the meantime: Songs that are accompanied not only by the piano, but also by another instrument. In order not to compete too much with solo singing, instruments in the middle voice ranges are suitable for these trio songs, such as viola or horn in this production. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the genre was so popular that even composer-celebrities such as Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms made individual contributions; but many were also written by little-known or even unknown colleagues, among whom there are many a hidden gems to be discovered.
The quartet Burkhart / Koch / Lamotke / Kaldewei has recorded works by Frantisek Skroup, Wilhelm Kleinecke or Heinrich Proch for the first time and provides a real enrichment of the repertoire.

Abendmusiken Basel, Jörg-Andreas Bötticher – Balthasar Erben: Sacred Concertos from Danzig (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Born in Danzig in 1626, Balthasar Erben was a cosmopolitan. When he applied for the position of Kapellmeister of the main church of St. Marien in his hometown at the age of 27, the council granted him a generous scholarship so that he could “look around the world and perfect himself as a composer”. For five years, Erben traveled throughout Europe, visiting all the centres of musical culture of the time, including Rome. His compositional style, which was developed during this time, is correspondingly distinctive: a combination of different influences, cleverly interwoven. The Abendmusiken Basel offer an impressive collection of instrumental and sacred works by the composer who is unfortunately little known today.
