Fretwork, Dublin Consort Singers, Mark Keane – John Amner: Complete Consort Music (2019) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

John Amner was born and died in Ely, Cambridge shire and worked for the greater part of his life at Ely Cathedral, as a boy chorister and later as informator choristorum. He succeeded some of England’s finest composers such as George Barcroft, John Farrant and Christopher Tye. He received his Bachelor of Music from Oxford with the support of the Earl of Bath in 1613, and also from Cambridge in 1640. Although not a ‘celebrated ‘ composer of the Renaissance era, the music in Amner’s Sacred Hymnes shows that he was capable of writing in a number of styles from three-voice conzonets through to elaborate consort anthems of multiple voices in the verse sections. Also on this fascinating album is his five part Pavan and Galliard Amner’s only surviving works for viol consort which represents an indication of a broader compositional output of instrumental music by the composer. Amner has been seldom recorded, and this meticulously and lovingly curated album represents an important addition to the understanding of both the composer and the provincial religious music scene in England in the first half of the 17th century.

Fanny Azzuro – Rachmaninoff: The Landscapes of the Soul (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

“Recording the complete Preludes is like painting notes with an unlimited palette of sound!” writes pianist Fanny Azzuro in the notes to her debut album for Rubicon. “Playing this music is exhilarating. The danger is that you lose control of your emotions and yield to the temptation to pile on the pathos in music that is so naturally expressive.

Esther Birringer – Once Upon a Time (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Esther Birringer has chosen three great Russian ballets for her recital album. All three have great stories – drama, love and tragedy in the case of Petrushka and Romeo & Juliet, and fantasy in The Nutcracker, which is based on a tale by ETA Hoffman. Tchaikovsky’s suite from ballet was arranged for piano by Mikhail Pletnev. Prokofiev, a superb pianist, arranged numbers from his ballet Romeo & Juliet for piano, and Stravinsky took three sections from his ballet Petrushka and created the Three Pieces – it is a superb showcase for any pianist and makes great demands upon the performer.

Elizabeth Sombart, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Pierre Vallet – Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos 20, 21, 23, 27 (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The four great concertos on this new album span the years 1785 – 1791, Mozart’s last year. The range of emotions these works convey is extraordinary. No.20 in D minor left the audience at the premiere reeling. It is terse, angry and full of passion.

The C major concerto No.21, in contrast, is sunny, bright and full of optimism. No.23 in A major is bathed in a feeling of warm contentment. The wistful and heartfelt Adagio is especially striking.
No.27 in B flat of 1791 is an autumnal work of intense sadness, almost as if the composer sensed his life was coming to an end.

“Sombart’s playing is superb: technically precise, but possessing a flexibility and freedom that lets the music breath” – The Observer

Esther Birringer – Debussy (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

For her second solo recital album for Rubicon, Esther Birringer turns to Debussy with a recital that includes both books of his Images. Composed in 1901-5 (book 1) and 1907 (book 2), the composer was very pleased with Images, writing about the first set: “Without false pride, I feel that these three pieces hold together well, and that they will find their place in the literature of the piano… to the left of Schumann, or to the right of Chopin.”

The three works that make up this highly attractive programme span a century: Franck’s Sonata in its officially sanctioned transcription for cello was taken from his popular Violin Sonata of 1886. It was composed as a wedding present for the violinist Ysaÿe. Dutilleux’s Trois Strophes sur le nom de Sacher was composed for Paul Sacher’s birthday and given its premiere by Rostropovich with the composer at the piano. Composition was spread over a decade, having started in 1976. Poulenc’s Cello Sonata was dedicated to Pierre Fournier and completed in 1948. Michael Petrov and Erden Misirlioğlu are members of the acclaimed Trio Isimsiz.

This is a fascinating, haunting and thought provoking debut from an extraordinary young talent.

Dudok Quartet Amsterdam – What Remains (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Dudok Quartet Amsterdam – What Remains (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The title What Remains of String Quartet No. 4 (2019) by Joey Roukens can be understood in various ways. On a poetic level, the words correspond to the character of the music, which often seems to hark back to ‘something remaining’ from a previous era – ruins, ghosts, scraps or memories. This interpretation, both of the words and of the music itself, marked the beginning of the associative exploration that led to this album of the same title. A fascinatingly curated programme from the Dudok, drawing on music from the 13th, 14th and 16th centuries, with 20th century works by Messiaen and Reich, and into the 21st century with the work that provides the album’s title, the 4th String Quartet by Roukens, commissioned by the Dudok Quartet. Both Reich and Roukens’ music was influenced by Gregorian chant, and the early organum and polyphonic music that followed. Time, travel, locomotion – journeys through time and the memories of these journeys all come together on this thrilling new album from the Dudok Quartet, Amsterdam.

Dudok Quartet Amsterdam – Brahms: The String Quartets & String Quintet No. 2 (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam is forging a reputation as one of the most creative and versatile quartets of its generation. The Guardian commented on their “lithe, lively sound and alert sense of structure and detail”. This recording, their first for Rubicon, of the Brahms Quartets and the second of the String Quintets for which they are joined by Finnish violist Lilli Maijala, will be eagerly awaited by their growing band of followers and chamber music fans generally. The quartet play with unwound gut strings and a set of bespoke classical bows.

David Haroutunian, Mikayel Hakhnazaryan, Sofya Malikyan – Brahms: Piano Trios 2 & 3 (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Brahms keenly sensed the shadow of Beethoven saying “You do not know what it is like, hearing his footsteps constantly behind one”. It was this towering presence that spurred the young Brahms to master his craft and establish his voice. The First Piano Trio in its original form (1854) quoted from Beethoven, but the revised version has no trace of the quote. This work was revised at the end of the composer’s career. The 2nd and 3rd Piano Trios show that Brahms had already achieved complete maturity and his unique voice was established before the revision of the earlier Trio. No. 2 dates from 1880 and No. 3 from 1886.

Dudok Quartet Amsterdam – Shostakovich & Bacewicz: Reflections (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

“As a string quartet of the 21st Century, we are searching for the meaning of the music we perform. Our goal is to convey the image which emanates from the music in the most authentic way. As a kind of time-transcending minstrel, the Quartet is continuously searching for the best ways to reflect the music from the past, with a new meaning and for a contemporary audience” – Dudok Quartet, Amsterdam

Christoph Konig – Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” (2019) [FLAC 24 bit, 88,2 kHz]

This new recording from Christoph König and Soloists Européens Luxembourg features Dvorak’s evergreen ”New World” symphony alongside Charles Ives’s Washington’s Birthday and Aaron Copland’s Quiet City. In the 19th and 20th centuries, for those leaving the Old World – meaning in most cases Europe – America represented the hope of starting a new life unshackled from the past and its politics. America was, for many, a land of dreams. It is this reflective and dreamy quality which unites these three different compositions, each one describing in its own way the land once known as the New World.

Chloë Hanslip, Danny Driver – Beethoven: Violin Sonatas, Vol. 1 (2017) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Chloë Hanslip and Danny Driver are approaching the culmination of a complete Beethoven Violin Sonata cycle where each concert is both broadcast live by the BBC on Radio 3, and recorded by Andrew Keener and Phil Rowlands for Rubicon. Beethoven’s ten violin sonatas represent the supreme challenge for a violin and piano duo, and the drama, visceral excitement and many intimate moments of these masterpieces is superbly captured in these live performances.

Chloë Hanslip, Danny Driver – Beethoven: Violin Sonatas, Vol. 2 (2018) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Beethoven’s op.12 set of three violin sonatas had been praised for their technical prowess, but criticised for the abrupt changes in mood, one critic saying (1799) he felt as if he was starting out on a pleasant stroll in the country with a friend, only to end up entangled in bushes and brambles, to return home in a bad mood. Beethoven who was notoriously touchy when it came to such reviews, responded with two sonatas that could not be more extreme in character. The 4th, has been described as a wayward stepchild among his ten violin sonatas is an extraordinary work that would drive our confused critic well and truly further into the brambles! The first movement would usually be found as a finale, and in place of a slow movement is a jokey ‘scherzoso’. The finale has the characteristics of an opening movement. It’s sister work is the famous ‘Spring’ sonata – a work of grace and beauty and one of the most popular of all violin sonatas. The 7th sonata, one of a group of three in the op.30 set is characterised by Beethoven’s stormy and dramatic C minor mood, in stark contrast to its op.30 siblings Chloë Hanslip and Danny Driver have received critical acclaim for their musical partnership both on stage and in the studio. Gramophone described Volume 1 of their Beethoven Sonatas RCD1010 as ‘engaging and accomplished performances…they create a world in which you want to spend time’.

Christian Svarfvar, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Johan Ullén – Infinite Bach (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

“The Bach Violin Concertos are not only one of the Baroque period highlights, but are one of the foundations of the entire history of music”, writes Swedish violinist Christian Svarfvar on his new album of “Bach Re:Composed” by fellow Swede Johan Ullén. “It’s a whole world of beauty in sixty minutes. Then you may ask yourself: why recompose something that is already so perfect?”. The result is this brilliant album of re-composed Bach concertos, with a fearless and technically challenging stratospheric solo violin part contrasting with enriched cellos and basses. For those who loved Max Richter’s “Four Seasons”, “Infinite Bach” will be a wonderful discovery for them. Bach was forward looking and his influence has travelled the centuries, influencing jazz, rock and pop musicians as well as every classical composer who came after him.

Christoph König – Beethoven: The Symphonies (2020) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

With many of the Beethoven 250 anniversary events sadly cancelled, the great man’s genius can still be celebrated thanks to the many new recordings of his works appearing during 2020. A new cycle of the symphonies is a big event for any orchestra, and the superb Solistes Europeèn Luxembourg and their chief conductor Christoph König have over the past few years been recording all these ground breaking masterpieces. The 9th was recorded in the summer of 2019, and the 2nd and 10th were recorded in 2020 just before the Coronavirus pandemic struck. As you would expect from this orchestra and conductor, these are individualistic and searching interpretations – anyone who has heard their recording of the ‘Eroica’(RCD1020 ‘powerful and rich in detail’ Sunday Times) will know what to expect. For this complete cycle there is a new recording of the ‘Eroica’ so expect more surprises! The 10th Symphony 1st movement in Dr.Barry Cooper’s realisation from the composer’s extensive sketches and Carl Czerny’s recollections of Beethoven playing through passages on the piano.

Christoph König & Soloists Européens Luxembourg – Schubert / Berio (2018) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Just before his death in 1828 at the age of just 31, Franz Schubert was at work on his 10th Symphony in D major D936a, and had signed up for counterpoint lessons with Simon Sechter, who later taught the young Anton Bruckner. The 10th was destined to become yet another unfinished Schubert work, and his 6th unfinished symphony, but the extensive sketches are fascinating and show Schubert clearly moving into new sound worlds that anticipate Mahler in the central slow movement. Berio’s ingenious work ‘Renderings’ brings Schubert’s extensive sketches alive by creating a new work around and within the framework of the unfinished symphony.
