Danish National Vocal Ensemble, Marcus Creed – Kodály & Ligeti: Choral Works (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 192 kHz]

This recording offers the unity of two generations; generations that respectfully challenge each other, providing two views on traditional Hungarian vocal folklore. Este, the first choral work composed by Kodaly, is in keeping with the impressionist language that was in style at the time. After the First World War, feeling the urgency to preserve Hungarian heritage, the composer (with the help of Béla Bartók) collected over 3,000 melodies and wrote choral arrangements for them. The result features incredible pieces such as Esti Dal and Mátra Pictures, a monumental a cappella which perfectly captures the spirit of folk literature, recounting village life in the mountains.

Messiaen’s most famous work, Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time), was composed while a captive in a German prisoner of war at Stalag VIII A, located near the town of Görlitz-Moys in Silesia, Germany. Messiaen met there three fellow prisoners who were also accomplished musicians: Etienne Pasquier, a world-class cellist who had already secured an international reputation as a member of the Pasquier Trio; Jean Le Bou-laire, a violinist who had studied at the Paris Conservatory; and Henri Akoka, a clarinetist who was a member of the Paris-based Orchestre National de la Radio. Together, this unusual ensemble formed the basis for one of the most extraordinary works of the 20th century.

All of Piazzolla’s more than 750 works are inextricably bound to an essential and unmistakable Argentinian identity. In commemoration of 100th anniversary of the birth of the genius of Nuevo Tango, the young Danish master of the modern accordion, Bjarke Mogensen, is joined by the award-wining percussionist Johan Bridger and winner of the title “Chromatic Harmonica World Champion”, and ‘New Jazz Star of The Year’ Mathias Heise. Together with members of The Danish Chamber Players they bring Piazzolla’s vibrant and sensuous scores vividly to life!
