Cameron Crozman, Philip Chiu – Tapeo (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

“A technically perfect duo with a personal style.” (Classica)
Spanish music is the focus of “Tapeo”, a new recording by cellist Cameron Crozman and pianist Philip Chiu. Works by Gaspar Cassadó, Manuel de Falla, Joaquin Turina are performed on “El Tiburon,” a circa 1769 Spanish cello attributed to Joannes Guillami, and generously loaned by the Instrument Bank of the Canada Council for the Arts. “I fell in love with Spain the moment I first stepped into a tapas bar in the middle of Barcelona”, says Crozman. “Each of the short pieces on this album was chosen for its own unique flavor and will give you a musical taste of Spain’s incredibly diverse and rich culture. And just as Spanish food would be unthinkable without the tomatoes and potatoes of the New World, so too it felt like an album of Spanish music would be incomplete without a couple gems from Hispanic America”.

They serve as inspiration for six new works by Canadian, French, Colombian, and American composers commissioned by Crozman, whose own exploration is included as the seventh piece in this unique program.

Cameron Crozman, Philip Chiu – Cavatine (2019) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Cavatine, the debut album of cellist Cameron Crozman and pianist Philip Chiu, explores the refined world of French music in the first half of the 20th century. Framed by the great Sonatas of Debussy and Poulenc, the programme includes lesser-known works by Messiaen, Koechlin, and Francaix. Together, they paint a vivid picture of the multitude of styles- from the impressionist to the surrealist- that defined the era. Described as a mature artist with a profound musical imagination, (Toronto Concert Reviews), Cameron Crozman is being hailed as one of Canada s leading young cellists. Maintaining an active performance schedule in North America and Europe, engagements have taken Cameron to such prestigious venues as the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Berliner Philharmonie, Paris Philharmonie, and Canada s National Arts Centre. An avid chamber musician, Cameron Crozman is frequently invited to perform with world leading artists and ensembles. Philip Chiu concertizes extensively as one of Canada s most sought-after chamber musicians. Along with pianist Janelle Fund, he forms one of Canada s most exciting piano duos, the Fung-Chiu Duo.

Les Voix humaines – Bach, J.S.: The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080 (2013) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Les Voix humaines – Bach, J.S.: The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080 (2013) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Bach’s Art of Fugue, BWV 1080, left unfinished at his death, is a curious work: it was written out in open score, with no indication of instrumentation, almost as if it were an abstract set of exercises in writing fugues. Yet it is anything but pedagogical; there wasn’t another human being alive who could have followed Bach into the arcane realms of counterpoint where he goes here. Various commentators have argued, probably correctly, that Bach had keyboard performance in mind, but there is no question of historical correctness, and the work has been played on everything from saxophones to synthesizers. Even so, this performance by Canada’s Les Voix Humaines viol consort may be unique; other performances look forward into more contemporary worlds of instrumental sound, but this one looks backward. The players do not modify their basic sound too much from what they would apply to English viol music of the 17th century, which creates a sound that is hard to judge beyond saying that you’re likely to love it or hate it. It’s a very odd experience to hear Bach’s studious depth filtered through the quintessence of English melancholy, but it does seem to make increasing sense as the performance proceeds. Where Les Voix Humaines departs from the norm is in adding ornamentation to the music. This too has been debated through the years, but it doesn’t really work here, perhaps because the ornaments seem inconsistently applied. Queasy sound from a suburban Montreal church is another small disincentive. But in the ongoing discourse of interpretation of The Art of Fugue, this is an intriguing entry.

This new recording features the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal, soprano Florie Valiquette, mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó, and vocal ensemble Queen of Puddings Music Theatre. The human voice is at the heart of Sokolović’s work, so that it is fitting that her vocal works Sirens, Tanzer Lieder and Pesma are featured on this ATMA debut recording. Evta, a concerto for violin and ensemble, is included and features Andréa Tyniec as soloist.

Quatuor Molinari – Alfred Schnittke: Quatuors à cordes Nos. 1 à 4 (2011) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Between 1966 and 1989, Alfred Schnittke composed four string quartets. In 1971 he added the Canon in Memoriam Igor Stravinsky to his works for string quartet, and in 1997, Variations.
For almost half a century, Schnittke composed more than 250 works — from opera and chamber music to film music and concertos. While drawing inspiration from the past and exploring the many aesthetic characteristics of his day, he forged a personal musical language he called polystylistic.

Internationally acclaimed by the public and the critics since its foundation in 1997, the Molinari Quartet has a mandate to perform works from the 20th and 21st centuries, to commission new works and to initiate conversations between musicians, artists and the public.
