David Six – Karkosh (2019) [FLAC 24 bit, 44,1 kHz]

On his new album “Karkosh”, the Austrian pianist David Six shows the impressive results of his engagement over the course of almost two and a half years in, and with, the sacred space, which he describes as “praying to music.” Practicing, playing and composing music on a daily basis in a Frankfurt church inspired in him an intensive examination of the creation and impact of music. His recordings of his own compositions on this album combine sound and space, art and spirituality, melding these together to a greater, transcendental whole. A journey in search of the essence of music that is worth listening to.

Christoph Zimper – The Millennials Mass (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 44,1 kHz]

Just a few years into his career, Christoph Zimper found himself the solo clarinetist with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, and in great demand as an orchestra- and chamber musician. In 2018, he decided to leave the orchestral jobs behind and find out how to express existential matters – like an “intensely perceived moment”, for example, “that may look perfectly unremarkable from the outside” – in a musical language of his own. Or how one might use musical means to get Millennials – to which he belongs himself – to ponder the eternal questions of life. Here now is Zimper’s fascinating debut album as a composer, for which he has asked a selection of hand-picked soloists, the Eggner-Trio, and the group Plattform K+K Vienna to join him in the studio.

Stylistic diversity and openness to new things characterize the compositional work in Graz, so that the institute for composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz has an excellent international reputation. For the retirement of Gerd Kühr, who has helped shape this path over the years with his commitment and his composition class, an album of short piano pieces was created, which the composers of the institute wrote for Gerd Kühr. Gerd Kühr’s piano cycle »Praeludium – eight interludes – postlude« appears for the first time. With aphoristic accuracy, the short pieces each throw their spotlight on a special gesture of playing the piano.

Annette Bik – Double Bach (2018) [FLAC 24bit, 88,2 kHz]

Annette Bik – Double Bach (2018) [FLAC 24bit, 88,2 kHz]

Annette Bik, violinist with the Klangforum Wien, is familiar with both early and contemporary music. On her first solo album, “Double Bach”, she presents a fascinating experiment: she asked leading contemporary composers to write a double of each movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s famous “Partita in h-Moll”. The idea seemed even more compelling since Bach also added a variation, or double, to each movement of his suite.

As listeners we are in the unique situation of being able to experience a Bach double double, a stroke of genius in the mirror of our times, a fascinating auditory document where the greatest virtuosity and immediate impact come together in a rare coalescence. In that moment, we feel what the Austrian publicist Armin Thurnher expresses so succinctly in the Liner Notes for this CD: “Bach is a complete cosmos for sceptics, Bach is the experience of infinity for mortals.”
