Floris Mijnders – Spezl (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

Spezl (Bavarian for ‘comradeship’) is a sonorous and lively 7MNTN album from the high-regarded musicians Floris Mijnders and Jelger Blanken. The performers’ close musical friendship echos that of the composers whose works they present here: Richard Strauss and Ludwig Thuille. Strauss and Thuille remained close friends throughout their lives, studying together and sharing musical ideas. While Strauss achieved worldwide recognition as a composer, Thuille is remembered mainly as a professor of music theory and composition. This duo offers an irresistible combination: fierce and tender playing from Mijnders, complemented affectionately and sensitively by Blanken. But as in any friendship, this duo also challenges and questions each others’ musical decisions, sparking an inspired, musical dialogue. The summation is sparkling and joyful musicality, together with extraordinary ease and craftsmanship. Allow yourself getting embraced by the beguiling, intimate sound-world of this duo!

Daniël van der Hoeven – Immersed (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 192 kHz]

Daniël van der Hoeven – Immersed (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 192 kHz]

On Friday 18 March pianist Daniel van der Hoeven presents his new cd “Immersed”. The cd contains works by Bach, but not the standard repertoire for piano. Bach’s oeuvre offers enough for the pianist, one might say: French suites, English suites, Partitas… you name it. Nevertheless, Daniel van der Hoeven chose repertoire that was originally written for 1 violin, namely the 3 solo Sonatas. He tells Hans Haffmans why he makes that choice and he will also play live in the studio!

Dorothea Herbert, Peter Nilsson – Die stille Stadt (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

Dorothea Herbert, Peter Nilsson – Die stille Stadt (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

German soprano Dorothea Herbert submerged herself into the quietness we’ve all encountered during the COVID lockdowns. Society became to a full stop, an of course tragic time but also one that offered introspection. “Die stille Stadt” gives musical expression to that and became an album with a radiating program consisting of music by the unfortunately still underrated Alma Mahler, two breathtaking song cycles by Erich Wolfgang Korngold (including the famous aria Gl”uck, das mir verblieb from Die tote Stadt), completed by a selection of very powerful and illustrative songs by Franz Schreker. The piano part is taken care of by the legendary Peter Nilsson. “Die stille Stadt” is an album that will move many lovers of vocal recitals, due to it’s resonant and exclusive musical character with not too often heard repertoire.

Belinfante Quartet – Ellipse (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

Belinfante Quartet – Ellipse (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

The ‘Ellipse’ is a timeless, never-ending orbit through space.Planets and moons move around space creating ellipses and the different pieces of music in our album feel like they gravitate towards each other creating a universe of sound.“Music contains all in sublime form. All human emotions are expressed; love, bliss, resignation, death. It can all be expressed by music. It is all within us. We make it, we compose it, we perform it.” (Frieda Belinfante)

Bianca Bongers – Surrounded by Air (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

Bianca Bongers – Surrounded by Air (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

Bianca Bongers is a Dutch composer and on “Surrounded by Air” she presents a synopsis of her most important recent works. The program consists of eight pieces that are dedicated to and performed by four ensembles and four soloists respectively, including Bongers herself on cello.

The young composer explores spatial dimensions, resulting from her deep desire to write music as if it were tactile and visible objects. The listener is presented with a luminous, enveloping sound experience in which extremes are not avoided in terms of playability of harmonic – and rhythmical structures.

A radiant audio portrait of a gifted composer, performed and recorded with the same great care as she designed her music by top international musicians.

Arthur Klaassens – Ratio (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Arthur Klaassens – Ratio (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

“Ratio” takes you on a musical oboe journey in a way you’ve possibly never had before: 40 instruments from the oboe family composing a polyphonic Renaissance choir, swaying rhythms with Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint, impeccable instrument control with Berio’s legendary 7th Sequenza, Bach’s 2nd Violin Partita in a clever and freshly made multi-voiced setting. Commissioned specifically for this album, in close kinship with Klaassens, a haunting composition by one of the most proficient Dutch composers of now, Jesse Broekman.

Agostinho Sequeira, Arjan Jongsma, Shane van Neerden – Toonzetters (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

What do the twenty-somethings of today sound like? Toonzetters is a kaleidoscopic music album based on the concert series of the same name by Twenty Dutch composers in their twenties, such as Karmit fadael, Mathilde Wantenaar and Jan-Peter de Graaff. The album is a steaming cocktail of colorful and diverse music, which is also accessible to a large audience. With this album, the twentysomethings show the way to the future, helped by four excellent young musici. In the attached CD book je tells musicologist Saskia Törnqvist about the latest developments in the world of music, partly on the basis of quotes from setters-composers. Attached images from the concert film by Bowie Verschuuren give extra color to the compositions.
