Florent Ghys – Ritournelles (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 44,1 kHz]

On his third solo recording for Cantaloupe Music, Florent Ghys radically retools his creative approach with Ritournelles & Mosaïques — a wide-ranging two-part opus that pulls back the curtain on an intrepid composer, double bassist and electronics bricoleur in full sonic exploration mode. Ghys began work on the project in late 2019, but like the rest of the world, he soon found himself in the midst of a prolonged isolation period, which inspired him to expand his creative palette. On his previous album Télévision, Ghys had begun with an audio-visual idea; this time, he started at the root: with the sound.

Sō Percussion co-founder Jason Treuting flexes his compositional chops with Nine Numbers — a sprawling work that taps into the mysteries of sudoku, the Japanese puzzle game, as a source for rhythmic exploration. Relying on percussive uses of voice, electronic and acoustic instruments, and various blocks, bells, drums and other surfaces, Treuting folds melody, movement and the plosive mechanics of speech into an ebbing and flowing sound environment that digs deep into the notion of what connects numbers to human nature, and vice-versa.

Anonymous 4 – David Lang: Love Fail (2014) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The recording also spotlights the vocal quartet Anonymous 4, whose commitment to medieval music and historical scholarship has been acclaimed worldwide.

Cello Octet Amsterdam – Michael Gordon: 8 (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

“Eight cellos in a circle. The audience can sit around the octet, or even inside the circle. The cellists start to play, and the resulting music spirals around like a moving object. 8 is part of a series of works that started with Timber for six percussionists playing amplified simantras, and includes Rushes for seven bassoonists and Amplified for four electric guitarists. Each of these works is meant to induce a quasi-meditative, almost ecstatic state, in the listener as well as the performer.

Alarm Will Sound – Tyshawn Sorey: Autoschediasms (Live) (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 44,1 kHz]

Alarm Will Sound performs Autoschediasms by Tyshawn Sorey. Sorey’s “Autoschediasms” are live compositions: works composed in the moment, challenging the distinction between improvised and composed music. In this video-chat Autoschediasms, Sorey uses his unique language of visual gestures, text directives, and autonomous prompts to collaboratively create a piece with Alarm Will Sound in real time over video chat. He explains: “I always think compositionally. Much of what I do is craft even when I spontaneously create something. The performers must do the same and they’re equally responsible for the result. At no point can one performer take this process of making music for granted.”
