Mirella Freni, Luciano Pavarotti, Herbert von Karajan, Berliner Philharmoniker – Puccini: La Boheme (1972/2014) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The role of Rodolfo from Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème launched Luciano Pavarotti’s career in 1961 when he made his professional debut in a small regional production in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He would revisit the role several times over his career, including this 1972 album considered to be one of the finest versions of La Bohème ever recorded. Equally impressive here is Pavarotti’s childhood friend Mirella Freni as Mimi. Conductor Herbert von Karajan proves himself a masterful, sensitive interpreter of Puccini as he leads the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Filarmonica della Scala, Riccardo Chailly – The Fellini Album (2019) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

What a pleasure it is to return to Riccardo Chailly, at the head of the Filarmonica della Scala, with a collection on Rota (1911-1979) and more particularly his songs written for the great films of Fellini such as Amarcord, Huit et Demi, and La Dolce Vita! Before him, another Riccardo, Muti, had dedicated, in the 1990s, two albums with Sony Classical to the film scores of the Italian composer – with one collection on his non-cinematographic corpus. Whether Rota’s music was for cinema or the concert hall was of little importance as he rolled out, to the likes of Bernard Herrmann in the United States, a style that was true to himself where one feels his genius and prowess for evoking ambiance mixed with an incredible dexterity for the most diverse genres, as can be heard in Suite taken here from La Dolce Vita. The beginning (O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia) of the following Il Casanova di Federico Fellini, in which the chiming of the pendulum evokes the tragic destiny of the character and the harmonization of somber colors creates a sea-like atmosphere, remains without a doubt one of the most striking tracks on the album. This ambiance returns in the final part, this time all the more mind-blowing (The Dancing Doll). Often influences from the East, of Chostakovitch and Khachaturian (Il Duca di Württenberg), can be heard along with more meridian styles inherited from Italian symphonists from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. A passionate album not to be missed.  – Pierre-Yves Lascar

“To hear an orchestra with such a distinctive central European sound playing Elgar, and relating his music so securely to the wider late-romantic tradition, is one of the disc’s great pleasures.” Andrew Clements, The Guardian (of the Cello Concerto recording)

Daniel Behle, Armonia Atenea, George Petrou – Gluck: Opera Arias (2014) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Celebrating the 300th anniversary of Gluck’s birth, Daniel Behle presents this album of Gluck’s lesser known opera arias. Showcasing their rich variety of styles, he illustrates that these works are primed for revival.
In the world of opera the artistic achievement of singers and their fellow musicians can create a special, incendiary chemistry with an audience. There is nothing like that magical moment of silence at the end of a marvellous aria before the first cries of „Bravo!“ ring out.

For his Gluck recital the German tenor Daniel Behle has chosen glorious arias by a master of the 18th century – Christoph Willibald Gluck – that are sure to elicit a rapturous response, especially when performed by one of the finest lyric tenors of our time.

Behle has been compared to such tenor legends as Fritz Wunderlich, Richard Tauber and Anton Dermota, praised for his “bright, supple and warm timbre” and his natural musicality (Fono Forum, August 2012). The beauty of his tone is complemented by the probing nature of his interpretations as he captures the emotions of each character with captivating psychological insight, playing in a masterly fashion with the colours of the music. Familiar arias are transformed into a new and moving experience.

Daniel Behle is accompanied by one of Europe’s leading Baroque orchestras, Armonia Atenea, conducted by the extraordinary George Petrou.

Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, Monica Sinclair, Jules Bruyere, Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Richard Bonynge – Donizetti: La fille du regiment (1967/2013) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, Monica Sinclair, Jules Bruyere, Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Richard Bonynge – Donizetti: La fille du regiment (1967/2013) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Even Dame Joan Sutherland has rarely if ever made an opera recording so totally enjoyable and involving as this. With the same cast (including chorus and orchestra) as at Convent Garden, it was recorded in 1966 immediately after a series of live performances in the Royal Opera House, and both the comedy and the pathos come over with an intensity born of communication with live audiences. That impression is now the more vivid on this superb transfer, for with spoken dialogue used in this original French version of the opera the absence of background noise is a special benefit, and the production vividly captures the developments in the story.

Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Jiří Bělohlávek – Dvořák: Slavonic Dances Opp. 46 & 72 (2016) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Maestro Belohlavek and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra return to Decca with the unforgettable Slavonic Dances from one of the most melodious, harmonious and evocative late 19th Century composers – Dvorak. Decca’s acclaimed 2014 Complete Dvorak Concertos and Symphonies release was named as one of the Top Recordings of 2014 by the New York Times: “…the set as a whole stands as eloquent testimony to this eminent orchestra’s triumphant return to international prominence…” James R. Oestreich, New York Times. Performed and recorded by musicians who have an innate understanding and deep-rooted love for this music of their homeland, this is a first-rate recording, bringing great passion and lyricism to Dvorak’s spellbinding Slavonic Dances. There is no more authentic team today to play these works: the leading Czech orchestra with the leading Czech conductor, recording in the fine acoustic of the famous Rudolfinum in Prague. In two sets, the Op.46 Slavonic Dances were such a success on release (in the late 1800’s) that Dvorak’s publisher immediately commissioned a further set (to become the Op.72) – which inspired an equally enthusiastic reception. Lively and colourful, both sets feature a variety of traditional forms of dance; Dvorak expertly working with the leaping gallop, polka odzemek and skocna, contrasted alongside luscious mazurkas and sousedsky.

“Bonynge leads a team … which not only conveys jollity but which sings and plays as though full opera house applause is to be expected a the end of each number … The ECO playing … has a refinement and stylishness which makes all the difference … Pavarotti has a Gigli -like quality in characterisation and this suits him ideally for the role of the simple, devoted Nemorino … you should readily be won over by the sheer exuberance, vocal as well as dramatic, that Sutherland brings to the role. It is a joy to the ear to have well- loved music treated to extra vocal splendours at both ends of the soprano register.” –Gramophone

Daniel Barenboim Speaking About the Project
“I think the Beethoven symphonies with the Divan orchestra is different in the sense that there is a terrific amount of energy because of the youth of the people – but there is just as much rigour. The combination of rigour with youthful energy is very strong” (Daniel Barenboim, speaking in the TV documentary on this project).

Daniel Barenboim – Elgar: Sea Pictures. Falstaff (2020) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

No conductor working today has done more to internationalise Elgar’s music than Daniel Barenboim. Like Georg Solti and Bernard Haitink before him, Barenboim has recognised that the best of Elgar’s music deserves to be compared with that of his European contemporaries, and that its roots are often more firmly embedded in Austro-German late Romanticism than they are in the pastoral landscapes of Edwardian England. He made an extensive series of Elgar recordings with the London Philharmonic in the 1970s, but returned to the composer in 2014 with a recording of the Second Symphony, followed two years later by the First. Magnificently played by the Berlin Staatskapelle, with its burnished, dark central European sound, both performances were a revelation, immediately reconnecting Elgar with the composers he most admired, Brahms and Richard Strauss. If Barenboim’s subsequent Berlin recording of The Dream of Gerontius was less exceptional, it still cast fresh light on a staple of the British choral repertoire.
Elgar: Sea Pictures; Falstaff album art work

The two works on this latest disc present a very different challenge, however. Where the symphonies and even Gerontius relate very obviously to European archetypes, there’s something much more indelibly English about both Falstaff and the song cycle Sea Pictures. Falstaff is the nearest that Elgar came to composing a Straussian tone poem (he called it a “symphonic study”), but there is something missing here. Technically once again the performance is impeccable, but it misses a nostalgic dimension that the finest British recordings – Adrian Boult’s, John Barbirolli’s – identify more convincingly without ever becoming twee, which Barenboim’s performance unexpectedly does.

The Latvian mezzo Elīna Garanča is the soloist in Sea Pictures. Janet Baker’s recording with Barbirolli is the benchmark here, and though Garanča’s diction can be indistinct and she doesn’t match Baker’s conviction in the fusty Victorian poetry that Elgar sets, her golden sound and warm, supple phrasing are still very appealing on their own terms.

Luciano Pavarotti, Ileana Cotrubas, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Fiorenza Cossotto, Gabriel Bacquier, Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Richard Bonynge – Donizetti: La Favorita (1974/2013) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

La favorite (‘The Favorite’, sometimes referred to by its Italian title: ‘La favorita’) is a grand opera in four acts by Gaetano Donizetti to a French-language libretto by Alphonse Royer and Gustave Vaëz, based on the play Le comte de Comminges by Baculard d’Arnaud. It premiered on 2 December 1840 at the Théâtre de l’Académie Royale de Musique in Paris, France.

Originally, Donizetti had been composing an opera by the name of Le Duc d’Albe as his second work for the Opera in Paris. However, the director, Léon Pillet, objected to an opera without a prominent role for his mistress, mezzo-soprano Rosine Stoltz. Donizetti therefore abandoned Le Duc d’Albe and borrowed heavily from L’ange de Nisida, an unrealized project from 1839, to create La favorite. It was revived in Padua under the title of Leonora di Guzman in 1842, and at La Scala as Elda in 1843. Though Donizetti himself was not involved in these productions, the opera is now more commonly given in Italian rather than French.
