Fabienne Romer, Sybille Diethelm – Plangliedli, Lanzigliedli, Herbstliedli, Heiwehliedli (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Plangliedli, Lanzigliedli, Herbstliedli, Heiwehliedli: dialect texts and cozy sounds in the art song? This is more than a beautiful dream. The singer Sybille Diethelm and the pianist Fabienne Romer present precious, imaginative, poetic and humorous settings of poems by the dialect poet Meinrad Lienert (1865-1933). And with him it’s a bit like with Mozart: you like his poems if you only hear them once without knowing exactly why. And if you deal with them more extensively, it can happen that you almost “git” with joy because they are so charming and eloquent and so full of fine details.

Franziska Andrea Heinzen, Benjamin Mead – Eugen Meier: Lieder us um Tal (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

This recording by the Swiss soprano Franziska Heinzen, accompanied by the pianist Benjamin Mead, is on the one hand a declaration of love to Franziska Heinzen’s home canton of Valais, and on the other hand a homage to the art of Swiss song: the starting point is the song cycle “Lieder us um Tal” (1981) by Eugen Meier on Valais German poems by Hannes Taugwalder (1910-2007), which is thematically expanded with selected songs by Swiss composers of the last two centuries.

Edward Rushton – Mon amie la lune. Lieder by Grieg, Debussy, Kirchner & Maurice (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 88,2 kHz]

The soprano Kathrin Hottiger and her accompanist Edward Rushton have dedicated their new album to the much-sung about earth satellite. You can hear compositions by Theodor Kirchner, Claude Debussy, Edvard Grieg and the little-known Vaudois composer Pierre Maurice. A delightful compilation of songs and piano compositions that revolve around the themes of night and moon.

Dmitry Smirnov, Kammerorchester Basel, Heinz Holliger – Lalo: Violin Concertos, Op. 20 & Op. 29. “Concerto Russe” (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Dmitry Smirnov, Kammerorchester Basel, Heinz Holliger – Lalo: Violin Concertos, Op. 20 & Op. 29. “Concerto Russe” (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

This new album of the Basel Chamber Orchestra shows references between French and Russian music at the end of the 19th century. Dmitry Smirnov interprets the 1st and 4th violin concertos by Édouard Lalo. The latter is called “Concerto russe” because it contains songs from the folk song collection op. 24 by Rimsky-Korssakoff. Smirnov has now arranged these songs himself for chamber orchestra or for violin and orchestra. Presented in this context, the songs add an extremely interesting new note to the musical bridge-building. Musical direction: Heinz Holliger.

Music of the transition: An interesting compilation presented here by Daniel Huppert and the Bergische Symphoniker. The 2nd Violin Concerto by Sergei Prokofiev (soloist: David Nebel), is combined with Symphony No. 25 by Nikolai Myaskovsky. The programme is complemented by the arrangement of the piece “Masks” from Prokofiev’s ballet “Romeo and Juliet” for violin and orchestra, made especially for this recording.

Daria Parkhomenko – George Enescu: Works for Piano (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Through her generous movements on the instrument and a feel for the piano that seemed like painting color on a canvas, Daria’s feelings were externalized in sounds, which made up the sublime, romantic music.

Die Freitagsakademie – Johann Gottlieb Janitsch: Instrumental Music (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The early music ensemble “Die Freitagsakademie” is still committed to its namesake, Johann Gottlieb Janitsch, and makes music for his immensely rich oeuvre. The chamber music gems presented here (two of them as first recordings) bear impressive witness to Janitsch’s equally elegant and imaginative compositional art. They combine the melodic sweetness of the “galant” style popular around the middle of the 18th century with contrapuntal finesse and expressive harmony.

Daniel Behle – Unerhört – Outrageous. Krämerspiegel And Other Songs (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

A much welcome recital of well-known and lesser-known Strauss Lieder by Daniel Behle, Opus Klassik prize winner and “Singer of the Year 2020”, accompanied by Oliver Schnyder. The album offers a selection of atmospheric songs such as ”Winterweihe”, “Winterliebe”, “Waldseligkeit”, “Traum durch die Dämmerung” and “Morgenrot” which are all partly nature-related or about interpersonal relationships.

David Philip Hefti – David Philip Hefti: Early Works, Vol. III (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Early works by probably the most famous Swiss composer, David Philip Hefti.

As a start there will be “Early Works, Vol. 3”, with the piano trio “Schattenspie (ge)l” and the song cycle “Rosenblätter” based on 15 poems by Rose Ausländer. “Rosenblätter” is interpreted by mezzo-soprano Judith Schmid and Oliver Schnyder on the piano.

Daniel Behle – Heimat – 500 Jahre Heimatlieder und -gedichte (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

“Heimat” is a specifically German term that has no hundred percent equivalent in most other languages. On his 18th solo album, tenor Daniel Behle – together with german hornsound – has made a foray through music and cultural history. 29 arrangements, almost exclusively by Alexander Krampe, are united on the extensive double album; in addition, the famous German actor Mario Adorf has read ten texts on the subject.

Christoph Dangel – 1824 – Hummel, Romberg, Rossini & Schubert (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

This album focusses on the year 1824 and brings it to life through the marvellous music of four composers who gave the cello a special role in their compositions, and by the text which tells the story of the year 1824 based on original sources from journals, newspapers, letters, recollections, historic objects and works of art. The text is a loose collection of well-known, newly discovered, strange and everyday happenings, anecdotes, moods and opinions which throw light on a year in which much else happens, not least of all the first performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Christoph Scheffelt – Beethoven: Complete Bagatelles (2020) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

A genius is also interesting in his little things. And what seems small on the outside, it does not necessarily have to be. Thus the Bagatelles are among the remarkable piano works of Ludwig van Beethoven.

“Vive la Bagatelle! – From a great man everything is interesting, and the trifles of the same are not the least of it.” This statement by Jean Paul could well have been applied to Ludwig van Beethoven and his bagatelles. In any case, it reinforces doubts that the Piano Pieces op. 33, 119 and 126 are only by-products of the intellectual arrangement of the great sonatas and variation cycles.

Burak Çebi – Franz Schubert: Piano Sonata in B-flat Major, D 960 (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

When Burak Çebi put together the repertoire for his album “Bright Spots”, his first intention was not to introduce the public to as many different composers from Turkey as possible. Instead, he was guided solely by his personal taste in the selection of pieces and chose works that he most wanted to record. Although he would describe himself and his “artistic existence” as European in many respects, his view of the music of his home country is by no means marked by Orientalism. Rather, it is a search for his roots, which are also always connected to the future. After working intensively on the conception of this album, Burak Çebi discovered more and more his own way of composing, ultimately telling his story as a person and as an artist.

Burak Cebi – Bright Spots (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 192 kHz]

This new CD, recorded by German-Turkish pianist Burak Cebi, presents selected piano works of Saygun, Akses, Schubert, and a recording of Cebi’s own Bright Spots.

When Cebi compiled the repertoire for this recording, it was not so much his intention to introduce the audience to as many different composers from Turkey as possible. Rather, he was guided solely by his personal taste in the selection of pieces and chose the works he most wanted to record.

Two world premiere recordings on the new album «Swiss Treasures» by the Portugal-based Art’Ventus Quintet: The Wind Quintet by Peter Mieg (1906-1990) from 1970 and «Adagio und Scherzino» (1963) by Paul Huber (1918-2001). In addition, there is the Quintet op. 84 by Paul Juon (1872-1940) and the highly original Divertimento for Wind Quintet op. 69 (1977) by the Graubünden composer Gion Antoni Derungs (1935-2012).

Annette Bartholdy – Bach Sonatas BWV 1027-1029, Pärt: Spiegel Im Spiegel (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The three gamba sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach have been played on a wide variety of instruments over the course of time and have found the most diverse forms – just like the two pieces “Spiegel im Spiegel” and “Fratres” by Arvo Pärt. Apart from the contrast that the two composers present simply because of their different eras, the changeability of the pieces is not the only thing they have in common: both Bach and Pärt always have a spiritual statement at the centre. This was the central point for violist Annette Bartholdy and her piano accompanist Benjamin Engeli in the conception of their current album.
