Daniel Lippel – Aufs Lautenwerk (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

In a historic first, critically acclaimed Guitarist Daniel Lippel brings these three beloved masterworks in their original keys to a classical guitar refretted in Baroque well temperament. They were written at & for the keyboard, where each key has it’s own unique Affekt. What a joy it is to finally hear them in all of their original key-colored glory. Composer/critic Kyle Gann has said, “Playing Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier in today’s equal temperament is like exhibiting Rembrandt paintings with wax paper taped over them.” The same may well be said of Bach played on the modern equal tempered guitar. “Aufs Lautenwerk” is a co-release with John Schneider’s Los Angeles based MicroFest Records and available in digital format through their catalogue.

The release marks Votek’s bold recording debut as both a traditionalist performing Hindustani raga on cello, and an innovative composer exploring the intersection between Western and Indian Classical traditions.

Aron Kallay – Beyond 12: Reinventing the Piano, Vol. 2 (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

For nearly 200 years, the pianos design has been exactly the sameconsisting of seven sets of twelve keys which are arranged by pitch. Beyond Twelve is a project that uses state-of-the-art physical modeling technology to break free from these constraints and open up a new world of musical possibilities. Here, concert pianist Aron Kallay premieres new works from eight of Americas most visionary composers, unified by their use of a keyboard that has been re-tuned and/or re-mapped in various ways. Kallay, who has been described by Fanfare magazine as “”a multiple threat: a great pianist, brainy tech wizard, and visionary promoter of a new musical practice,”” is a faculty member at both the University of Southern California and Chapman University.
