Ensemble La Cantonnade – Jakob Friedrich Kleinknecht: Trio Sonatas (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 44,1 kHz]

The fact that few works on Jakob Friedrich Kleinknecht are still to be found these days is due less to an injustice on the part of the history of music or to the overshadowing genius of his contemporaries Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn than to the vagaries of history and the cultural context then in upheaval.

Various Artists – Steffen Wolf: Essais musicaux (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 44,1 kHz]

The album Essais musicaux brings together chamber music works for violin, clarinet and piano from the years 2017-2021. Three of the six pieces attempt to capture aspects of time, while the remaining compositions are inspired by the arts of painting, architecture and literature.

In a fundamentally searching and open attitude, all six works follow the idea of the literary-philosophical essay, in which the subjective perspective is the most attractive aspect of the investigation, and the process of questioning itself is of great importance. Steffen Wolf’s Essais musicaux do not aim to be a linear “translation” of paintings, texts or buildings into the language of music; Rather, they talk about these art encounters, sometimes dreamily and freely associating, sometimes clearly composed.

“From Bohemia’s Woods and Fields” – this is how we might sum up the shared roots of these four composers. Vaclav Pichl (world premiere recording) and Johann Baptist Vanhal penned their works in an early classical style, while Bohuslav Martinů and Roland Leistner-Meyer, born 1945, deployed the aesthetic means of expression of their own period to enrich the repertoire while still invoking the ideals of the classical era. This programme is the perfect treat for listeners who enjoy discovering new works and expanding their musical horizons!

Duo Maiss You – Beethoven, Brahms & Zimmermann: Viola Sonatas (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

The magic, enigma and uniqueness of Ludwig van Beethoven’s (1770–1827) Sonata “Kreutzer” in A major Op. 47 have influenced not only music history but also literature from Tolstoy to Dürrenmatt, and it takes a long search to find a chamber music work that has a similar nimbus. Wild and untamed not only the work itself but also its history of creation appears. Beethoven wrote the “Kreutzer Sonata” for the violinist George Bridgetower (1778–1860), who spent some time in Vienna in 1803 and became friends with Beethoven. After an unusually short period of creation by Beethoven’s standards, the Sonata was premiered at the Augarten in Vienna by Bridgetower and the composer at the piano.

Alexandra Sostmann – Bach, Byrd, Gibbons & Contemporary Music (2020) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

This new recording is about polyphonic references between the great counterpoint artists Byrd, Gibbons, Bach and the contemporary composers John Tavener, Oliver Knussen, John Adams, Markus Horn and Xiaoyong Chen. The two Bach Ricercari from the Musical Offering form the bracket. The exciting connection of the individual, different works to each other is created by the polyphonic structures, the modal church keys or by religious, spiritual references. 429 years lie between the work of Byrd and the work of Xiaoyong Chen composed for the release. With Bach, Byrd, Gibbons and Contemporary Music, the listener can expect a recording that is wonderfully audible, in a positive sense unexhausting. You have to get involved with the depth, the space and sometimes the silence, but it is worth it, because the music changes your own self and focuses attention on you. Im interested in the connections between different epochs and their polyphonic structures. So obviously there was no way that I could ignore Johann Sebastian Bach. However, I considered what to combine with his Ricercares a 3 and a 6 from The Musical Offering. First I thought of William Byrd, as I knew that polyphony and contrapuntal style were important to him, despite the fact that he was almost 150 years older than Bach. I began with vocal polyphony and arrived at Orlando Gibbons and virginal music, which I wanted to combine with contemporary music. And then the search began (Alexandra Sostmann)
