Ludwig van Beethoven’s music and the myth of Prometheus are not suitable for children’s ears? Far from it!

The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra presents a child-friendly arrangement of Beethoven’s ballet music “The Creatures of Prometheus”. The children’s project “Prometheus”, arranged by Christoph Teichner and conceived by Carolina Nees, focuses on the inner turmoil of the title character, who created two people. But now he is asking himself the questions of what a person needs and what he should be able to do. Fortunately, he does not have to answer these questions all by himself, but receives help from the lovely muses and other gods. So Prometheus can face the difficult task and will definitely find the right answers.

Ensemble Oni Wytars – Cantar d’amore (2015) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Ever since people have been falling in love, songs or poetry have been written and addressed to the heart of the beloved. It’s been like this for millennia and hopefully will never change. In the past, the authors of these love songs and poems have been kings, male and female troubadours, vagrant minstrels, maestri di cappella, impoverished poets and countless others of whom unfortunately all traces have been lost. They have all have left us with an inexhaustible wealth of poetry and music, whose earliest traces go back to the Middle Ages.

Ensemble Notturna – Forgotten Chamber Works with Oboe from the Court of Prussia (2018) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Ensemble Notturna – Forgotten Chamber Works with Oboe from the Court of Prussia (2018) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

The ensemble Notturna under the direction of oboist Christopher Palameta has unearthed repertoire in several archives worthy of rediscovery. On this album they present as world premiere recording Berlin Chamber Music at the time of Friedrich dem Großen (Frederick the Great). The commonality of the selected sonatas by respected composers such as Johann Gottlieb Janitsch (1708-1763), Christian Gottfried Krause (1717-1770) and Johann Gottlieb Graun (1703-1771) is the solo instrument oboe. In the shadow of the flute, the favorite instrument of Friedrich dem Großen (Frederick the Great), the role of the oboe at the Prussian Court was underestimated for a long time. However there is still a variety of sonatas and concerts for this instrument which survived from this time. The Quintet in A minor by Graun, who was concertmaster of the Royal Court Orchestra since 1741, is characterized by frequent and unexpected changes of affects, dynamics and harmonies in order to achieve expressive and sentimental effects. In contrast to this work are the Trio Sonata in A minor, the Quadro Sonata in B-flat major and the Trio Sonata in G major by Janitsch, who became a violinist in the Court Orchestra in 1736. His works are much more influenced by a gallant style with varied melodies. The Trio Sonata in D minor by Krause is particularly fascinating in its original third movement, in which the oboe enters into a dialogue with the violin. A recording of beautiful Baroque music in unique interpretations.

Dorothee Mields – Handel’s Tea Time (2020) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

On her new Album, the outstanding Baroque soprano presented together with the Swiss early music Ensemble “The Friday Academy,” works for soprano and chamber music by Georg Friedrich Handel. “Handel’s Tea time “combines the two cantatas” Venus & Adonis “and” Mi palpita il cor “with instrumental works as well as excerpts from the” 24 English Songs “and the”9 German Arias”. The cantatas are magnificent examples of Handel’s art of expression, celebrating the human singing voice. The cantata” Venus & Adonis ” HWV 85 is probably Handel’s first composition in English. The cantata “Mi palpita il cor” HWV 132b, on the other hand, was written in Italy, but Handel revised it in his time in London. Handel also found time in Vocal Music for more intimate genres and forms of expression beyond the grandiose Arias and choruses. Thus over the years the “24 English Songs” and “9 German Arias”were created. The programme is rounded off by a” Concerto a quattro ” and a Trio Sonata for Oboe and strings. In addition, the “Air and Five Variations” for harpsichord give an idea of what an incredible keyboard virtuoso Handel must have been. As a tribute to Henry Purcell, who had made London an opera metropolis before Handel, an aria from his Semi-opera “The Fairy Queen”is heard at the end of the album.

Dorothee Oberlinger, Ensemble 1700, Bruno de Sá, Helena Rasker – Alessandro Scarlatti: Baroque Influencer (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

From the late 17th century until well into the 18th century, Alessandro Scarlatti was one of the most important figures in European musical life, influencing musical development in both opera and instrumental music.

This recording shows the variety of musical works created by the influential Baroque composer: from symphonies, arias and concerti to concerti grossi and sonatas for flauto dolce, strings and basso continuo. Scarlatti was a master in the art of instrumental composition. In the Sinfonia for the serenata “Venere e Amore,” for example, he uses the flauto dolce prominently, with rapid changes of affect and recitative-like passages in interplay with the strings.

Some 250 years later, the work, which stylistically seems to have been written five minutes before Mozart, with a mix of great seria arias and rousing folk echoes, experienced its celebrated resurrection as a production of the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci with the Ensemble 1700 and singers under the artistic direction of Dorothee Oberlinger. The production accompanying the performances will now be released as a world premiere recording on 9 June as a co-production with Musikfestspiele Potsdam and rbb Kultur on the deutsche harmonia mundi label.

Christoph Spering – Bach: Lutherkantaten, Vol. 2 (BVW 121, 125, 14) (2016) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Brand new recording of all Luther cantatas composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Half a millennium ago, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther launched this movement by posting his 95 theses on the door of Wittenberg’s Castle Church. Two centuries later, inspired by Luther’s words, & fully in the spirit of the reformer’s aim of spreading his theories via hymns, Johann Sebastian Bach composed what is probably the most significant body of cantatas based on Luther’s texts. Now, in honour of one of the most important events in Western religious history, Christoph Spering, his choir Chorus Musicus Köln & Das Neue Orchester have recorded Bach’s complete Luther cantatas.

Christoph Prégardien – Bach & Telemann: Cantatas for Baritone (2018) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Christoph Prégardien – Bach & Telemann: Cantatas for Baritone (2018) [FLAC 24 bit, 48 kHz]

Two cantatas by Telemann – logically unknown, as he wrote some 1,700 of them − only one by Bach – but one that reached cult status: Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen (I will gladly carry the Cross) −, here’s what’s on offer by tenor Christoph Prégardien (of German origin despite the “é”), and… Wait a second: even though we don’t exactly know for whom Telemann’s cantatas were originally written, Ich will den Kreuzstab was designed for a baritone, not a tenor, and there is no version transposed by Bach himself. But Christoph Prégardien, who’s now over sixty years old, opted to play it humble (or safe) and work with a much deeper range than Tamino or Ottavio, knowing that tenors can very well experience a loss in quality. A commendable decision that allows him to add some beautiful years to an already long and successful career as well as a change in repertoire. His very lyrical interpretation of these three cantatas demonstrates his commitment to the opera, as these cantatas are real dramatic scenes. Telemann, in particular, appears astonishing as ever with his unreal imagination and constant elegance that never gets in the way of profound emotion. For the overture, exit music and intermissions, the Vox Orchester offers some purely orchestral pages from Handel, Hasse and Telemann.
