Erdődy Chamber Orchestra, Zsolt Szefcsik – Laks, Rózsa, Orbán & Kilar: Orchestral Works (2020) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

The Erdody Chamber Orchestra’s third album includes works by both Polish and Hungarian composers active in the 20th century including Laks, Rozsa, Orban and Kilar. In 1994, Zsolt Szefcsik founded the Erdody Chamber Orchestra in Budapest to promote the Hungarian musical heritage and present achievements of contemporary composers. Over 25 years, the ensemble, using Hungarian manuscript collections, has presented over one hundred forgotten pieces. Thanks to this fact, it has become an orchestra with currently the most extensive repertoire of Hungarian music. A large group of works by composers operating in the 18th and 19th centuries has become available only thanks to the concerts of the Erdody Chamber Orchestra.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), one of the most famous composers of the Baroque era, is already an icon in the history of music. Rediscovered in the 19th century, he still attracts the attention of musicologists researching and studying his work. This extraordinary person evokes curiosity and admiration, while his contribution to the development of music cannot be overestimated. A genius about whom, as it seems, we already know so much, constantly inspires and provokes to in-depth research into his life and musical legacy.

Although today our knowledge about this composer and the interpretation of his music is highly advanced, there are still questions and new views on the approach to the genius dormant in the power of the Bach surname, since it does not only concern the master from Leipzig, as is common to say about Johann Sebastian. The musical activity of the Bach family was impressive, and the analysis of the family tree reveals the composer’s solid musical roots. The spirit of genius does not end there as well, as the musical legacy of his sons has also become a permanent part of history.

Erdõdy Chamber Orchestra, Zsolt Szefcsik – 1948 (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

The main idea behind this recording was to focus on the presentation of pieces composed by Hungarian and Polish artists in one particular year: 1948. We wanted to show here compositions of two major artists from each of those countries. Both Hungarian pieces featured on the album naturally continue the ‘Hungarian sound,’ characteristic of the interwar period, shaped by the output of Zoltán Kodály. Cast in four movements, the Serenade for String Orchestra by Endre Szervánszky (1911-1977) is an example of one of the outstanding compositions symptomatic of the generation of the master’s successors. Let us quote the words of an excellent music critic, Marianne Pándi: ‘This work combines all the qualities of the Hungarian music of that period: it is melodic, understandable, Hungarian in style, and rhythmic. It is a source of first-class entertainment.’

Trio Lontano, Adrian Stanciu – Żeleński: Chamber Works (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

On January 23, 2021, the music world celebrated the hundredth anniversary of the death of Wladyslaw Zelenski, the founder and long-time director of the Music Conservatory in Kraków, and one of the most outstanding representatives of the Romantic era in Poland. This album contains studio recordings of two great chamber works, showing the excellent compositional technique of the Polish composer. Recordings of both works make us aware of the enormous potential of Zelenski as a composer. What’s more, each of the pieces, despite the apparent simplicity and formal transparency, is marked by a large dose of individualism and expressive and social distinctiveness. All this makes the above-mentioned works by Zelenski one of the greatest showpieces in the history of chamber music in the world.

Dominika Przech, Adam Goździewski – Szymanowski, Klecki & Bargielski: Works for Violin & Piano (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

“Violinist Dominika Przech and pianist Adam Mikolaj Gozdziewski present a repertoire of Polish music created throughout the 20th century, extremely ambitious in terms of performance and interpretation. All works presented on the album refer to the output of Karol Szymanowski, whose early Sonata in D minor, op. 9 opens the album. Original references to Szymanowski’s music in the works of Pawel Klecki and Zbigniew Bargielski are perceptible on the purely musical level, especially when one is aware of the artistic development path and inspiration of both artists. The thread connecting Bargielski with Szymanowski goes back to his teenage years and his studies under the supervision of the following composers: Piotr Perkowski, Tadeusz Szeligowski, Boleslaw Szabelski and Nadia Boulanger, two of whom were Szymanowski’s students, one was his friend and Nadia Boulanger was the person to whom Szymanowski directed his students for further education. “Testimony of his [Szymanowski’s] students, who were my teachers, embellished my ideas and intuitions” – the composer himself admits.A well-thought-out, mature interpretation of the presented works reveals not only their affinity in terms of form, emotionality or motivic phrases, but also emphasizes the individual details of all these elements.”

Collegium Cantorum, Janusz Siadlak – Łuciuk: Vesperae in assumptione Beatae Mariae Virginis (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Another album in the Anthology of Polish A Cappella Music series was being created on the eve of the first anniversary of Juliusz Łuciuk’s death. This time, the “Collegium Cantorum” Choir of the Częstochowa Philharmonic reached for the internationally unique work Vesperae in assumptione Beatae Mariae Virginis (Vespers on the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary). While researching the output of the Częstochowa-Cracow composer one can sense his individual style, based on a few indefeasible pillars. One of them is profound respect for tradition, with particular emphasis on the Gregorian chant, both in terms of the melodic solutions of the monody and the entire culture and performance conditions surrounding the chant. Other pillars of his work are the quest for colour in harmony and the peculiar simplicity of emotions reflecting the composer’s personality. The Vespers presented on this album can be considered the quintessence of the style of Juliusz Łuciuk, an artist who was particularly passionate about sacred music.

Bartosz Koziak – Martinů: Cello Concerto No. 2 & Cello Sonata No. 2 (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Following the album featuring the Cello Concerto “Canti Amadei” by Krzysztof Meyer, Bartosz Koziak releases another programme, this time with music by Bohuslav Martinů. This is yet another studio meeting of the Polish cellist with Martinů’s music after the very well-received recording of the composer’s Duo for Violin and Cello with Anna Maria Staśkiewicz.

Bartosz Koziak – Meyer: Canti Amadei, Op. 63 & Symphony No. 5 for String Orchestra, Op. 44 (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Solo concertos are often a fruit of musical friendships between composers and performers. This is the case of Canti Amadei, and the inspirer, great Russian cellist Ivan Monighetti, once described the circumstances in which it happened. “I have always been attracted to the idea of receiving music from the composer himself; the opportunity to work with a composer, a wizard who brings entire worlds to life from non-existence, weaves a fairy-tale net of note lines and signs. In the early 1980s, quite by accident [together with Krzysztof Meyer], we listened to and compared several performances of Mozart’s Symphonies. Both for Krzysztof and for me, Mozart is one of the continuous lines of life, an inexhaustible topic to which we constantly want to come back. “What would you say about variations on Mozartean themes for cello and orchestra?” I asked him casually. (…) Krzysztof liked the idea and after some time I received a score called “Canti Amadei”. I was happy that, in a way, I had my share in the creation of this piece”.

When drifting over the bridge connecting the 19th century with the 21st century, the chances are that we might be fulfilling Mickiewicz’s dreams. Hardly anyone knows that the poet dreamt of composing and that music played a remarkable role in his life. He had already got familiar with folk songs from the Novogrudok region as a child; later, he developed an interest both in the relations between the poetic word and sound and in the natural melodiousness of the Polish language. He also gained theoretical knowledge of music, as he attended lectures on that subject during his studies at the University of Vilnius, thus becoming knowledgeable about musical and theatrical genres. In addition, he knew numerous composers in person, such as Fryderyk Chopin in the first place, to whom he suggested the idea of writing a Slavic opera together. In 1840, the poet addressed the following words to his friend Józef Bohdan Zaleski: “You know that if I had money, I would give up literature and books, I would settle down in the countryside and compose music. This is my long-time dream – to compose.” On this release, Mickiewicz’s words have been set to music by Benjamin Baczewski.

Anna Wandtke – Ávarp: Icelandic Chamber Music (2021) [FLAC 24bit, 44,1 kHz]

The Icelandic chamber music recorded on the album by Agnieszka Panasiuk (piano) together with Anna Wandtke (violin) and Pawel Panasiuk (cello) is characterized by varied expression, high emotional load and lyricism. The rich sound color comes to the fore, with a well-thought-out and coherent dialogue of instrumental voices. The piano is the central sound axis, shaping the character of the compositions presented on the album. Agnieszka Panasiuk is at ease with the use of a variety of expressive and virtuoso means, differentiating stylistically between compositions representing a number of trends present in the Icelandic music of the 20th century. The variety of colors, charisma and precision of the string instruments give the recipient a wide sonoristic image and complement the interesting whole. The album takes the listener into the world of the raw beauty of faraway Iceland and also encourages to reflect on the originality and uniqueness of the Icelandic musical language.

Anna Radziejewska, Krzysztof Trzaskowski, Justyna Reczeniedi – Romantic Duets (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

There is good reason that romantic music (because it would be a gross over-simplification to say that this style refers solely to the 19th century) is considered by musicologists to be the style that best embodies the spirit of romanticism, which blossoms with varying intensity throughout the history of European cultural development. Nevertheless it is true, that this style, that combines both national and folk elements and sublimely expresses a wide range of feelings, was at its peak at that time. The rapid and simultaneous development of the other arts such as poetry, painting and theatre also had a major influence on music. When considering romantic works, the first to come to mind are the great musical forms (operas, symphonic poems, sonatas, concerts, etc.), but the lighter, more intimate forms of expression (both instrumental and instrumental-vocal) also reflect the musical genius of composers.

The present release is a showcase of Romantic Duets, presented by soprano Justyna Reczeniedi, mezzo-soprano Anna Radziejewska, and pianist Krzysztof Trzaskowski.
