Fretwork – John Jenkins: Complete Four-Part Consort Music (2018) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]
For a good third of a century, the Fretwork ensemble has been constantly sifting through the immensely rich repertoire for consort of violas, generally from the British sphere, from Taverner to Purcell — so, the 16th and 17th centuries — while never hesitating to commission entirely new works from modern-day composers. The combination of the viola’s “ancient” sound with modern writing brings forth the most unlikely sonic spheres… This album keeps both feet firmly in England’s 17th century with John Jenkins (1592-1678), famous in his own day, and consistently one of the most essential composers for any self-respecting viola player from the very start of his career — both in England and abroad, which is unusual in itself — thanks to his output of literally hundreds of pieces for various viola ensembles. A number of them were written for “family”-style consorts, in large part due to the ban on all forms of public music implemented by Cromwell’s religious dictatorship. Once the monarchy was restored, the fashion for groups of amateurs playing concert violas would endure long enough to bring fame and fortune to composers such as Jenkins. Here we will discover a language which is at once conservative in terms of form, and very daring, explosive even, in terms of content, rather like the work of a 17th century Haydn.
Fretwork – Thomas Lupo: Fantasia (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]
FANTASIA is Fretwork’s eleventh release with Signum Classics, and explores the court music of tudor Eng- land through the works of Thomas Lupo. A very large quantity of Lupo’s private and intimate viol consort music has survived, and we can marvel at its variety and quality. He wrote for unique combinations of viols in his three-part Fantasies, however the five- and six-part fantasies are his most impressive work, seri- ous and compelling pieces showing a fabulous command of counterpoint.
Fretwork – Matthew Locke: The Flat Consort (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]
Matthew Locke was born 400 years ago in 1622, and while he is often ranked as one of England’s finest composers, he is still unaccountably neglected: his music may not be as immediately appealing as his immediate successor, Henry Purcell, nor as wide- ranging as William Byrd, yet his forceful musical personality and luxuriant technique place him in the first echelon of English composers, with his works described by Richard Boothby of Fretwork as having a “quixotic, capricious restlessness that is constantly challenging the listener to follow his argument … a thrilling musical ride”. Accompanying Fretwork on continuo for this recording are David Miller (archlute and theorbo) and Silas Wollston (harpsichord).
Emmanuel Despax – Spira, Spera (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]
Emmanuel Despax returns to Signum with a programme of JS Bach transcriptions. The title quotes Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (“Breathe, Hope”), brought to Despax’s mind following the news of the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral, where he had attended many concerts of Bach’s music as a child. Despax describes Bach’s music as being “of such clarity, coherence and expressive power, that it is able to transcend its original medium, and to some extent, style”.
Emmanuel Despax, Miho Kawashima, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Litton – Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 1 Op. 15, 16 Waltzes Op. 39 (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]
New concerto recording from acclaimed French pianist. Following the acclaimed Bach recording ‘Spira, Spera’ in early 2021, Emmanuel Despax releases a recording of his most treasured piano concerto alongside the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Litton. The concerto is paired with the 16 Waltzes (op.39) for piano four-hands, performed here with his wife and fellow pianist, Miho Kawashima.
English Chamber Orchestra, Robin O’Neill – A Celebration of Paul Reade (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]
Composer Paul Reade died 25 years ago and this year marks his 80th birthday. He was well-known for his music for television such as Play School, Antiques Road Show and The Victorian Kitchen Garden series but less familiar are the wonderful works on this beautifully compiled album.
Emmanuel Despax – Chopin: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 (Chamber Versions) (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]
Following the acclaimed Brahms recording in 2021, Emmanuel Despax presents his sixth album with Signum Classics. “Chopin’s Piano Concertos are among his first and most significant points of departure, a marked liberation from the constraints of an early but short-lived respect for custom and tradition… I would say that the exceptional nature of this Chopin recording lies in the combination of the chamber music, quintet slimmed-down version of the Piano Concertos complemented by a pianist who plays with an almost epic size and grandeur” (Bryce Morrison).
Ex Cathedra, Britten Sinfonia – The Traveller • Earth and Sky (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]
The Traveller, for choir, children’s choir, orchestra, tenor, violin and speaker, was the third in a series of four major works with words by Vikram Seth and music by Alec Roth, commissioned jointly over four years by the Salisbury, Chelsea and Lichfield Festivals (2006-09). Each work featured the violinist Philippe Honoré as soloist, and each took a different geographical/cultural area as its starting point.
Earth and Sky, for children’s choir and piano (with optional percussion), was commissioned by the BBC for the Proms 2000 season. In keeping with the millennial theme, a work presenting a vision of the future was requested.
Ex Cathedra has performed Alec’s music in over 200 concerts since 2007. There have been large scale commissions and recordings, alongside many short ‘gems’. It is of consistently high quality with moments of absolute genius. The relationship continues to flourish.
Emmanuel Despax – Après un rêve (Belle Époque: Nights at the Piano) (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]
“Après un rêve” is an ode to the French Belle Époque repertoire, depicting the beauty of dreams and the night. The album is an opportunity to hear and perhaps discover rarely played / rarely recorded wonderful works (Chaminade Nocturne, Duparc Aux étoiles, Poulenc Les soirées de Nazelles), alongside central pillars of the rep- ertoire, and includes a world premiere of Despax’s arrangement of Après un rêve. The album is attributed to his grandfather, Jacques Charpentreau, a French poet who adored this repertoire and frequently drew inspiration from the night in his works. Despax has curated some of his poetry, as well as works by other poets he admired to complement this music, taking the listener on an immersive poetic and musical journey through this nocturnal landscape.
Emmanuel Despax – Chopin: Preludes – Berceuse – Barcarolle (2017) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]
“Chopin the composer has always fascinated me – multifaceted, complex, a man of paradoxes. His music has huge scope yet at the same time is incredibly intimate and poetic. He sometimes has a reputation for being merely a writer of sentimental salon music; I wanted to correct this through this recording, and demonstrate how timeless and relevant, indeed modern his message is…” Emmanuel Despax

David Kenedy, Rianka Bouwmeester – Schubert: Arpeggione Sonata – Chopin: Sonata for Cello & Piano (2017) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]
Husband and wife duo David Kenedy and Rianka Bouwmeester partner for the first time in a new recording of two late works by Chopin and Schubert. In this very personal recital, Kenedy explores his own musical history and connection with the songs of Schubert: The Arpeggione Sonata is one of Schubert’s most lyrical instrumental works, almost a song cycle in itself, whilst Chopin’s passionate Sonata brims with feeling, as well as quoting musically from Schubert’s Winterreise in several places.
This new release is David Kenedy’s second with Signum, following his critically praised release of Bach’s Solo Cello Suites (SIGCD091).
