Fenella Humphreys, George Vass, The BBC National Orchestra of Wales – Sibelius: Violin Concerto & Humoresques (2021) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Already hailed as his country’s foremost composer, Sibelius completed what was to be his only concerto in early 1904, and its spellbinding and instantly recognisable opening can surely be counted amongst the most iconic of any. A virtuosic violinist himself, Sibelius beautifully evokes Finland’s natural landscape and ancient folklore, which continues through Sibelius’s 1917 work for violin and orchestra – the Six Humoresques – demanding a considerable level of technique. Violinist Fenella Humphreys joins with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conductor George Vass to present these formidable works with a world premiere recording of a new work for violin and orchestra by the American composer Nors S. Josephson – Celestial Voyage.

Flauguissimo – Roman: To the Northern Star (2023) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Flauguissimo duo, Yu-Wei Hu and Johan Löfving are joined by violinist Magdalena Loth-Hill, soprano Emily Atkinson, and viola da gamba player Henrik Persson for this recording of eighteenth-century sonatas, arias and trios by Johan Helmich Roman. Frequently hailed by later historians as the Father of Swedish Music, Roman started his career at the Royal Chapel of the Swedish Court, and also spent time studying and performing in London, where it is thought he received lessons in composition from Handel and Pepusch. This album features three contrasting sonatas, two arias from the composer’s cantatas containing flute obbligato parts, and an arrangement of a trio sonata in E minor, evoking a court salon concert in early eighteenth-century Stockholm.

Fenella Humphreys – Sibelius: Works for Violin & Piano (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

As both musician and composer the violin was central to Sibelius’s career, and his output for the instrument spans much of his long life. Acclaimed violinist Fenella Humphreys and celebrated pianist Joseph Tong explore a tantalising programme of Sibelius’s music, from the youthful Andante cantabile in G major composed in 1887, through Opp. 78 and 81, written in the midst of the First World War, to his last works for the instrument – Four Pieces, Op. 115 and Three Pieces, Op. 116 both penned in 1929. Completing the programme are the five Danses champêtres, Op. 106 from 1924–5.

Fidelio Trio – Fauré, Chausson & Satie: Piano Trios (2018) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Following on from their acclaimed Resonus debut the Fidelio Trio continues its exploration of the French piano trio with this impressive new recording of works by Gabriel Fauré, Ernest Chausson, and Erik Satie. Chausson’s opulent and lyrical Op. 3 piano trio from 1881, is joined by Fauré’s only work in the genre – the heartfelt Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 120 – composed during the latter part of his life. The album is completed with arrangements by John White of works by Erik Satie – selections from his only liturgical work, the Messe des Pauvres, and the incidental music to his own play, Le Piège de Meduse.

Fidelio Trio – Ernest Moeran: Chamber Music (2022) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Ernest Moeran’s love for Ireland and absorption of its music and musicians led to the composer living on the island of Valentia for two years while later making Kenmare his second home from around 1934 until his death there in 1950. Moeran’s experiences in Ireland appear to have influenced him melodically in the traditional folk dance-like textures he embraces, particularly throughout his early Piano Trio and Violin Sonata featured on this album alongside his Prelude for Cello and Piano and Sonata for Two Violins.

Flute and guitar ensemble Flauguissimo Duo make their Resonus debut with this unique programme of works for flute and guitar, A Salon Opera. Taking its inspiration from the Viennese salon music from the first half of the nineteenth century, when the music of the concert hall and opera was routinely brought into a more domestic setting, the Duo takes us on a journey through the rich repertoire both composed and arranged for the flute and guitar.

Rarely heard on disc, the songs of Florent Schmitt receive fresh exposure in this significant new survey of these neglected works including a number of world premiere recordings.

The qualities that appeal in many of Schmitt’s larger works are found in abundance in this selection that spans his entire creative life: his music’s gorgeous sensuality, biting wit, laconic charm, and unleashed savagery.

Pianists Fabienne Romer and Edward Rushton along with an outstanding lineup of soloists, explore this rich seam of complex compositional techniques, revealing a composer of extraordinary individuality along with a fascinating affinity with the darker side of human existence.

Cello and piano duo Robin Michael and Daniel Tong return to Resonus with this dazzling collection of the complete works for cello and piano of Ludwig van Beethoven. Written across his productive life, they contain much that is considered pioneering and innovative within the genre. The five sonatas and three sets of variations form a considerable contribution to the cello and piano repertoire, from the formative early Op. 5 sonatas composed as a young man, to the much later Op. 102 sonatas, penned following his infamous hearing loss. Rarely heard on disc performed on period instruments, Michael and Tong record these celebrated works using a cello after Matteo Goffriller from 1695 and a fortepiano after Anton Walter from c.1805.

Drawing on inspiration from earlier forms, polyhony and chant, Dall’Albero’s choral works prove at once both powerful and evocative. Included in this programme of world premiere recordings are two works written specially for the Sidney Sussex Choir (Magnificat) and for this album (the solo organ suite Trittico di Cantabrigia) – the first recording of the college’s new Flentrop organ.

Duo Belder Kimura – Bach, C.P.E.: Complete Works for Keyboard & Violin (2017) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

This new recording of Carl Philip Emanuel Bach’s (1714-1788) complete works for violin and keyboard gives us the great chance to have a complete insight on the range of his art throughout his life. The Sonatas Wq 71 and 72 date from his youth – 1731, he was then only 17 years old and still under the influence of a certain father, even if the keyboard part is entirely written, not just a continuo. The Sonata, Wq 74 was written 1745, when he was already in the service of Prince Frederick II of Prussia, the Sonata, Wq 74 of 1754 when he was taking a close interest in Silbermann’s new instruments which would pave the way for the pianoforte. Sonatas Wq 75 to 78 are dated 1763, some time before he left Potsdam for Hamburg, while the Arioso con variazioni, Wq 71 was written 1781. The double album closes with the Fantasy, Wq 80 of 1787, the ultimate maturity of a great man who at the same time helped to launch and bring to life the Sturm und Drang then Classicism, while in return he benefited from the novelties signed Haydn or Mozart. The Amsterdam-based duo Belder-Kimura signs this double album, a great performance. The earliest works are played on a harpsichord, the most recent (i.e. Wq 71 and 80) on fortepiano, given the ever more pianistic content of the keyboard part. A rare and alas somewhat neglected repertoire, which the music-lover will discover with more than some astonishment.

This first installment of two volumes sees the quartet explore the C major, G minor and F minor quartets. With some of the most celebrated works from the quartet repertoire, the Dudok Quartet relish delving into the monumental and dramatic gestures within Haydn’s highly developed rhetorical style.

Daniel Tong – Beethoven: Piano Sonatas, Op. 10 (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Daniel Tong – Beethoven: Piano Sonatas, Op. 10 (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Beethoven’s three sonatas of Op. 10 were published in September 1798 and were written with Beethoven the pianist as much to the forefront as Beethoven the composer. During this time, the young virtuoso was certainly as renowned as a pianist and improviser as he was a composer, and these three early sonatas contain the whole kaleidoscopic range of his youthful musical, emotional and pianistic language.

Pianist Daniel Tong returns to Resonus with this period instrument recording, his first solo album for the label, performed on a fortepiano by Paul McNulty – a copy of an 1805 instrument by the celebrated ‘Viennese School’ maker, Anton Walter.

Ceruleo – Purcell: Love Restor’d (2022) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Early music ensemble Ceruleo presents an album of music from restoration-era England. Featuring songs by Henry Purcell along with works by John Blow, Francesco Corbetta, and John Eccles, the album looks at the dramatic character of English Restoration music and its relationship to the theatrical tradition of the time. Providing a snapshot of the music that might have been heard in English theatres and concert halls, Ceruleo creates a performance – like the stage works of Purcell and Blow – which freely flits between deep emotion, humour and melancholy, all interspersed with instrumental dance music.

Swedish-born guitar virtuoso Johan Löfving returns to Resonus Classics to record his debut solo album with a programme of works for both solo guitar and guitar with string quartet. Joined by the Consone Quartet, and castanet player Nanako Aramaki, for Boccherinl’s fourth guitar quintet, Löfving presents a compelling selection of Romantic guitar repertoire framed by two fandango movements that show the influence of Spanish folk music, an idiom so intimately connected with this medium. With this recital of works from across Europe, the considerable reach and versatility of the guitar is on full display with music from the height of the instrument’s popularity.

Simon Nieminski – Charles Villiers Stanford: Organ Works, Vol. 2 (2014) [FLAC 24 bit, 96 kHz]

Following his landmark recording of Giles Swayne’s Stations of the Cross (RES10118), organist Simon Niemiński returns to the Resonus label with an engaging recital of organ works by Charles Villiers Stanford (see volume 1, Tom Winpenny, RES10104).

Showcasing another of Edinburgh’s rich and varied crop of instruments, Niemiński performs on the unspoilt 1913 Brindley and Foster organ of Freemasons’ Hall, right in the heart of the city. Recently given a full restoration in 2009 by Forth Pipe Organs, this organ is almost unique as a complete, unaltered example of this significant and pioneering organ builder, and provides an ideal vehicle for authentic performances of this music.
Included in this enjoyable programme is Stanford’s first organ sonata, as well as the triumphant Marcia Eroica, Op. 189, and two world premieres in The Angelus, Op. 194, No.3 and his beautifully simple early Prelude on the ancient melody ‘Jesu dulcis memoriae’.

Boxwood & Brass – Beethoven Transformed, Volume 1 (2019) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Following on from their universally acclaimed debut album, Music for a Prussian Salon, the period wind ensemble Boxwood & Brass returns to Resonus with the first of two volumes of Beethoven Transformed. In this major new project, the group explores the status of wind music in early-nineteenth century Vienna through original and arranged music by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) and his contemporaries. In this first album, Beethoven’s Op. 71 Sextet is paired with the Op. 20 Septet in E-flat major, arranged for six-part Harmonie by his prolific pupil, Carl Czerny (1791–1857). Founded in 2013, Boxwood & Brass brings together the emerging generation of British period wind-instrument players to advocate for neglected wind chamber music and harmoniemusik of the Classical and early-Romantic periods. Members of the group work regularly with top orchestras from across Europe, including the Orchestra Revolutionnaire et Romantique, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Gabrieli, L’Orchestra de Champs-Elysees and Spira Mirabilis. In-depth scholarly research into style and repertoire is important to the ensemble, as is promoting the highest standards in period wind playing.

Elysium Ensemble – Boismortier: Six Sonates, Op. 51 (Paris, 1734) (2016) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Elysium Ensemble – Boismortier: Six Sonates, Op. 51 (Paris, 1734) (2016) [FLAC 24bit, 96 kHz]

Joseph Bodin de Boismortier did not come from a celebrated family of musicians, as did such notable contemporaries as Jacques Hotteterre (1674–1763) and François Couperin (1668–1733). The son of a merchant confectioner, he held no long-term official post at the French court or other noble or ecclesiastical musical establishment. Acknowledged as being pleasant and good company, clever, original and inventive, he was simply a talented and prolific composer of profitable and popular works that enabled him to live a life of fame and luxury.
